Picture size limit

Currently the width of linked pictures is limited to 640. This is not working very well, esp. for team shots which are usually a lot wider than high.
Any chance to remove the size limit or at least pump it to 1000 pixels?

The reason the limit is in place is because the forum looks pretty nasty if images are wider than the screen viewing the forum - plus a bit of the post context.
Is there a difficulty resizing to fit?

I think if people actually knew the size limit then they can fix the pic before posting

The problem is that the picture becomes to small on higher resolutions.
for example check
this legal 640 width picture:

vs. this one width 1000:

Of course this depends on monitor ... on my 22" widescreen using 1680x1050 the first image is too tiny and the second on still fits very well into the forum format. I realise that people have smaller monitors as well, but 1280 width should be a standard nowerdays right?
Another problem is that larger images in older TBB posts are not displayed anymore.

Host bigger pics on sites like Photobucket, and add a direct link to your post.
Personally, I'm happier now that I don't have to keep right-scrolling on posts with pics.

I don't think 1680 is a standard width for most people. I regularly view on 1024.
I'll up the limit to 800.
If you think the level of detail is really needed then one thing you ought to be able to do is attach the full sized image to the post, and then link to a smaller version.

It might be auto-thumbnailing now too if you want to check - so allowing images up to 800x800, with 400x400 shown for oversized pics.

looks like the 640 limit is still in place and no autothumbnailing yet.
to try post the following with the first bracket corrected.

Okay - so using the IMG tags you are restricted to 800x800 now.
However if you attach the image the post it will thumbnail as in the post above and allow you to see the bigger version.
Is that satisfactory?

huh?
so you are saying insteaad of using the "img" button
I should use the "url" and it will post a small image to my off site image, then when they click on it it will go 800x800 or full size

Nope. If you really need to post an image bigger than 800x800 then you'll need to attach it to the post as a file.
If you post a reply look below the first submit button. There is a "filename" - use that to upload the image directly. Then it will appear just like this post with Tim's team piccy in it

Hi Ian, i can live with the current solution, 800 pixel is not optimal, but sufficent.
Regarding attachments, i can see the usefulness of that for others, but i'm not a big fan of them. You can't integrate them into a layout of the post, can't comment on them well, it's just a list of pictures at the end of your post. I'd rather put the big pictures on my webspace and link to that from the post
Thanks alot!

there is a mod for phpbb that resizes all inline images to the screen width then when you mouseover them it will make them full size
best of both worlds imo
