my son wants to know how many players he needs for his team to start playing.........

how is that team best made up....ie how many catchers,throwers ,blockers etc

Depends on the race - no catchers on Orcs for example.

To expand on Darkson's point, while the "best" roster is subjective (though not always hotly disputed), there are a number of sources that offer "recommended" starting rosters for the various races.
Plasmoid's collection of Playbooks offers suggestions for most races:

If your question revolves more around how many physical models of each type you might want, my answer would (for most teams) be the maximum number allowed for each positional, with the exception of models listed 0-16 or 0-12. There is, of course, no real reason you can't use proxies though, so I wouldn't sweat the issue too much.

if you go and buy any of the gw teams they usually come with 1 thrower, 2 blitzer types, two catcher/runner types and then 7 linemen giving you 12 minis for your team
