Varnishing Models

Being a newbie this may have been discussed already, (if so I'm sorry).
I'm having trouble varnishing my figures, the last team I painted I ended up using gloss varnish, (which now looks crap!)
I've heard that GW varnish doesn't work well on metallics, is this true? If so what do you guys suggest?

I've alway heard that the gloss varnish holds up better than the dull varnish. I use several coats of Testors Dull Cote. Some have said that gloss varnishing the mini first and then Dulll Coting to kill the shine is the absolute best way to go. I haven't tried it yet, though.

I have yet to varnish my painted teams, but I have been directed to spray varnish (not from GW) from another hobby store. Look in hobby/model railway stores for suitable stuff. Gloss always looks dumb in my opinion.

the "purity seal" stuff GW sells is supposed to be matt varnish but it isn't, it's semi gloss and it totally ruined my patient shading & highlighting
I'm currently looking at local arts & crafts stores to see if they have matt acryclic varnish...

What do you mean ruined your shading/highlighting? Did these actually disappear/become less or is it just that the glossy character of the paint has ruined it for you?

well I had blended them reasonably well but when I put the varnish onwhat was a smooth-ish transition from dark flesh to light flesh become a line of dark flesh around the normal flesh tone.

Hey guys. I know you will probably cringe when you hear this, but I go to Wal-Mart and buy Krylon right off the shelf. I've done historicals for years and they've held up unbelievably well. I prefer gloss because I like the "toy soldier" shine, but the matte finish works just as well. Not sure if you have the evil empire stores over in Europe, but I bet any deparment store or hardware store would fix you up.
