What is PBeM BB ... how does it work?

However you play online - Java, Vassal, Email, Cyanide etc - talk about it here.
This is also the place for discussing the various tools for managing leagues, teams and so on.

What is PBeM BB ... how does it work?

Post by GalakStarscraper »

I got asked this question ... so here is my answer.

PBeM means Play By E-mail ... the key to this type of BloodBowl is a program developed by Ronald Lokers .... its a truely masterpiece of work for the specific area of BB that it was created to handle.

In PBeM, each player has an HTML roster just like you would use to play with SkiJunkie's program or BBirc client. Both rosters are loaded into the game.

Then each player takes his turn ... plays out his move, throws his blocks, etc. When he's finished he saves the game to small saved game log file and emails the log file to his opponent. When his opponent opens the log file with the game, it will replay the game up to the saved game point. At this point, the opponent can rewind the game and review his opponent's last turn, after that he plays out his turn, and emails it back ... and so on, and so on, and so on.

That's how PBeM works ... a normal match will last between 5 and 26 days depending on the availability of the opponent and the differing time zones of the world.

I love PBeM because it lets me still play BB. I have two small childern and I don't have 2 hours to sit down and play a game via BBirc or SkiJunkie's game .. EVER and probably will not for some years to come. However, since it only takes me about 10 minutes to take one turn of PBeM ... I can fit that into my schedule. Basically, PBeM is for people that either cannot get enough BB OR don't have the 2 hours to sit down and play a full match.

I hope that answers the question. Any others ... let me know.

The rules for joining the MBBL2 league and the software is at:
http://www.midgardbb.com/MBBL2/MBBL2Rules.html

Please note that I plan on updating the software one last time before the league starts.

The teams available and all house rules of the MBBL2 are at:
http://www.midgardbb.com/

I am wrapping up everything for the league this weekend (hopefully) ... if you could Trambi ... when you email in your team, could you please tell me in the email that you are Trambi ... as I technically was done excepting new entries ... however maybe this will give you a chance to try a league based in some BB2k1 rules.

Also you might want to download the software and experiment ... McDeth, voyagers_uk, and others have been praticing against each other to get a feel for the software.

Oh one last thing ... in order to join the league you have to be able to take at least one turn each weekday (weekends not required). A turn only takes about 10 minutes but its required for all the matches to finish on time.

Just for the record voyagers played very well. I surprised him with a few plays that he didn't realize were legal. Like a block that pushed a player, that pushed a player, that pushed his ball holding Ghoul deep in my half out of bounds .... had to get Chet in to rule that it was legal.

I also took advantage of his Diving Tackle Mummy ... voyagers Mummy had 3rd edition DT, but we agreed to play it with BB2k1 PBeM rules. This meant that if I didn't turnover during my turn I also had a player dodge away from the mummy ... this meant my ST 3 linemen were able to knock the mummy prone several turns in the game by risking the 5+ dodge roll. In Season 3 of the MBBL2, I believe that we will play you only have to use Diving Tackle if it will also knock down the opponent, which would have helped him.

As for cleaning up in your league ... hmmm doubt it, see I always placed 5th in EVERY league I've played in (or 3rd if the top 2 teams go to finals) .... as I told Chet after this Amazons stomped my Necrarch team (4-0) in some PBeM practice .... I'm a good coach just not a great one ... So based on my curse I'd place 3rd or 5th in your league guaranteed.

Yes! And my going bribery rates - err, CONSULTING rates, my going CONSULTING rates - are very cheap!

(No, seriously, it was the right call.)

Hey, Tom, it was only 3-0. My Catcher developed a bad case of butterfingers on the last play, so it COULD have been 4-0...

...but on the other hand, it could have finished 3-1 if your Zombie had actually hit that Long Pass (Bomb?) at the end of the game!

And great fun was had by all...

I am not trying to be funny (usual that)

but I really like this forum, and I am glad to have somewhere like this to post my opinions and get a friendly response without the unlimited criticism shown elsewhere (maybe just in my head).

Thankyou all for making this such a great place.

About the game, i have played yesterday. And i wonder if you have to tape #2 is blocking your #3 with two dices and after roll two dices, or simply roll two dices and applic the result.
For me it's the first solution but it's seem very heavy to play and to tape all your actions.

You don't have to type who is blocking who.

Just click on the person you want to throw the block and then while holding down on the mouse, drag the mouse over the opponent you want to block ... the game will automatically type into the log who is blocking who and roll the blocking dice for you.

You should declare in the comment any action before you take it ... blitz, pass, handoff, foul, and cast are all declared actions.

As for the handicap rolls ... just manually apply the results ... if you get Buzzing .. pull them onto the field and then right click stats change to give one player Jump Up, Frenzy, and Nonball Handler. If you get Iron Man ... click on the ? button to get a random player and then pull them onto the field and right click to give then the Iron Man skill.

Smelling Salts is automatically handled by the game. If you get In Da Bag take every player on your opponent's team that is better than his worst 11 and pull them onto the field, then right click and make them all Temporary Out. If you get Running Late ... roll a D6, use the ? random to pick that many players ... pull them onto the pitch and make them Temporary Out ... if you get both Running Late and In Da Bag ... then I recommend you make the Running Late guys Temporary Out and the In Da Bag guys Miss Game.

Things like That Babe's Got Talent ... just type a ! comment to give yourself a post it reminder for the match that you have extra Cheerleaders.

Basically just manually apply whatever result you get with the game's features ... if their is a specific handicap result you have that you are not sure about let me know.

BTW ... I expect to mail out matches for the MBBL2 tonight .... I will state in the big email to everyone that due to Resurrection that many opponents may not start until Monday ... but otherwise players can start. The 20 working day clock will not start until Monday morning.

And I'm screwed.

I can't download anything at work, and my home computer is to slow.
Ergo, I'm left out and can't join anywhere

The file is only 1/2 meg zipped for the software and the games run about 50k.

Huh ... I thought everyone could use it.
