No More GROTS Kup!!

For those interested, da GROTS Kup tournament in Red Deer will be changed as it won't be held at the GROTS club space in the Game Store.
The GROTS Kup trophy will be used for the club BB league and I will do up a better looking trophy for my tournament. I want to go to a 2 day format (something I wanted to do in the beginning), but the store owner said that a 2 day tourney on a weekend was a no-go, so I'll be holding the tourneament elsewhere in Red Deer (possibly a community hall or some other such space).
Want some imput from those who are interested in attending.
The original name of the tournament was the Alberta Open. The trophies from the first year had that on them. The name was changed due to pressure from the club and a cheap homemade trophy was done up. As mentioned earlier, that trophy will be used as the league trophy and the trophy that will be made for the tournament will have the past winners on it.
Just wondering if I should use the original name, the Alberta Open, go with something else like Western Canada Open (as there are people from Vancouver interested in attending), or something a little more interesting?
Could call it the Northern Chaos Wastes Open, or something along that line.
Anyway, would like to hear some imput from those who have attended in the past or are interested in attending in the future.
Would be interested in getting some feedback from the Vancouver crew who expressed interest in coming next year (Generaljason, Lord Chaos, Warpstone, etc), as well as the regulars like Da_Scum and his crew and any other Edmonton or Calgary coaches.

Northern Chaos Wastes Open sounds good to me Colin.

What weekend are you looking at hosting it?

BTW, our league has done quite a number of trophy runs in the last few years. Talk to GJ and if our contacts can help you out, then we can bring them when we drive over.

Alberta Open or something maybe that mixes Alberta and Blood Bowl together if you prefer. Alberta, Albion, there's something in there....

But yeah, rent a cheap hall, and hopefully you can get a hall where you can run your own bar - something that is definitely in the works for Spike 2010. You just can't get a Special Occasion License in a hotel - you have to rent their bar where you pay the bartender per hour and make no money yourself.

But with your own bar, the drinks end up being half the price for the competitors, and you retain the profit. Definitely cheap to set up, and a good plan to pay off a venue.

If you are still planning on hosting it in April, I should be able to swing a road trip with a few guys from Vancouver for the inaugural 2-day premier Albertan tournament.

Looking forward to seeing more big tournaments out west. Spike! Magazine, West Coast Quake and now this! Go west!! :D

If you have tournament questions or you want more detailed suggestions, just email me at thunder-bowl@hotmail.com

A bit of an update. Heard back from some of the Edmonton guys (only one group, haven't heard back from the other group) and it seems that more prefer a one day event. Strange they can travel to Calgary or Vancouver for a 2 day tourney but don't want to be bothered to travel the 1.5 hours to Red Deer unless it's only for one day.
Still planning to go ahead with the 2 day event, I guess there will be less people from Edmonton. Oh well, their loss.

As far as the date goes. Had it in April because of the club events schedule. As I don't have to worry about that, would having it later be better for those travelling? Would a date in May or June be better?

One of the Edmonton groups suggested doing a Friday/Saturday tourney. How would that work for the rest of you, especially the Vancouver people?

I suppose a long weekend is out, as most people have other things to do then.

Comments please.

I wouldn't put it in June, but May would be ok. April is fine too.

I'd be taking work off anyway to go to this thing so Friday/Saturday probably works regardless, but most people - your locals especially, naturally have weekends off, so it would be for that reason alone that I'd still go with the traditional weekend tourney (sat+sun). Just my 2 cents.

I'd drop the 'Chaos' part, too long. 'Northern Wastes Open' or 'Northern Wastes (two/three syllables)' has a nice ring to it.

Good luck with it, though. I'd love to swing by, but it's a bit of a trip from the NCR and my models all look like crap, hah.

NCR? I wouldn't worry about your paintjob, as long as they're painted you'll get decent painting points.

National Capital Region.

I assume you mean Ottawa (as an American would just say DC).

You could make a holiday of it, don't just come for the BB tourney, take time to see the sights around Alberta (Edmonton, Calgary, Jasper, Banff, Lake Louise, etc.). Just a thought.

I've already taken a quick tour of Alberta and found it hard to survive with no real poutine around, hah.

Any news on a date Colin? I need to book all our dates for league play at the hotel for 2010 and I'd like to plan around this so we can try and attend. Thanks in advance.

Craig.
