Another great painted mini of Holger Schmidt, a german painter.
Here his finalist UK GD entry 2006.

Don't get me wrong, it's a very nice piece, and a helluva lot better than I'd ever manage, but it doesn't "do it" for me, though I can't pin down why exactly I'm not totally impressed. I'm not that sure on the shading on the horse's gasmask(?) - seems overly "busy", which is the only comment I can definetly make, but overall it just doesn't "work" for me.

I tend to agree with you Dark. There's something about it that makes the whole piece fall flat for me. Not sure what it is either.

I agree with DS, I just wasn't impressed by this it's a high quality job, but... eh... I probably wouldn't look at it twice.

Same here (though I hasten to add it is still a very impressive paint job.)
Personally, I don't like the horse's gas mask. It just doesn't look right. Especially as the rider isn't wearing one himself.
And the horse's front left foot makes the pose look very unnatural. No horse would ever put its foot down on a rock like that. It'd be an instant broken leg.
Final thing (that I can place) that makes it look wrong is the coat tails/cloak. If it is meant to be coat tails then it needs a split; all long cavalry coats have them. If it's a cloak then it shouldn't be there in addition to the coat on his shoulders. Either way it is too smooth in comparison to the heavily wrinkled coat.

Fair enough; but who was Indigo before Indigo was Indigo?

Ginger Rogers.

Nah! I'd to have needed to say "it's stupid, and what would you use it for?" for that.

I reckon its the horse Darky, I mean Indi, or whatever! The highlighting is too OTT. Still a lot better than I could ever do though.
