Terminator Chaplain (Pic Heavy)

Post by Abael »

I hope I can do this on this board... I think I can. ^^'

Anyway, while plotting out the purchase and construction of my new wood elf team, I still have my active 40k life going on. This is my most recent mini, and one of my best.

I like the overall look of the mini but it does look a bit messy when you get close on some of your shots. I don't think its painted messy but because of how busy the reflections on the metallics are combined with the detail you've tried to portray the effect looks better from a distance. Only real thing that stands out to me is the writing on the scrolls which is a bit thick for my tastes and looks out of sorts with the effort you've put into the rest of the mini.

On the plus sides its a lovely choice of colour, the base is presented nicely and the gritty effect to his armour looks great. Keep up the hard work, it always feels good when every mini you paint looks better than the previous one.

I thank you for your words.

The writing on the scrolls never was my strong point; it's too thick for my tastes too!

When you say: "It does look a bit messy when you get close... Because of how busy the reflections on the metallics are combined with the detail..."
Do you think that NMM would produce a better result? The thought had crossed my mind, but I'm far from being capable of it considering that even my highlighting skills are inadequate.

I'd like to see a more weathered metalic finish on the left rear shoulder area, and some of the areas are a little sketchy close up, but over all not bad at all.

I think NMM would look fantastic but in all honesty I cannot do it so I'd never suggest it to someone else lol. I guess what I would say about the messyness is more down to the angles you've shot at and how close you got makes the mini not look quite as nicely painted as it actually is. If you did consider NMM then try and get another metal terminator then photograph him before you undercoat to give you an idea of how the light would reflect. From this reference you know where you need to highlight due to the dull/shiny metal on display, its just the colours you have to get right.

If you were to seriously consider trying out NMM there are a few people on here I'm sure who could give you tips.

As Gumbo said though its a very good effort you've made and should in no way deter you from further efforts. For the record I hate painting Blood Bowl teams because by the time you've done 4 or 5 minis I usually want to go back and redo the first 3 due to the better techniques I've picked up as I've gone along. I dream of the day when my skills are advanced enough that when I look at a mini and I dont want to change something.
