As far as I'm concerned there are two ways in which a niggling injury can work with some realism.
One way is the way it is now. If it flares up the player will miss the match. Rolling each drive/action isn't realistic enough in my opinion as i preceive a niggling injury as something you can't just shake off in a short period of time.
The other is the fact that the player will become a a bit more injury prone. To reflect that you could count all BH results as MNG, or (accounting for multiple niggles), add +1 to the sigurd roll or perhaps the SI roll (maybe +10?). With the +1 to the sigurd roll you could count only a natural 6 as a death.
Change niggling injury?

What i like about it (rolling each drive)is that the niggle, and the loss of at least a portion of the match, occurs during the match. IMHO The way a niggle is now ignores (considers irrelvantmepmuff wrote:As far as I'm concerned there are two ways in which a niggling injury can work with some realism.

I'm not really a fan of making a niggled player more injury prone but how about this for an option.
1st Niggle. Niggling Injury rules as they are now.
2nd Niggle. Niggling Injury rules as they are now AND (if a player makes his 1st Niggle roll) niggling injury rolls each drive for that drive.
More Niggles? Add a +1 to each of these rolls.
On the face of it this would make players with 1 niggle useful, 2 niggles would still allow a player the chance to relive their old glory on the field and any more than 2 niggles could be a serious pain.
Unfortunately this method will probably not mix to well with the ageing table, i think i've probably rambled enough.

OK, my take on a realistic and fun version of a NI:
1-2 player misses the game.
3-4 player rolls before each drive...1-3 sits out with ice on the knee or retaping the ankle, or getting the equipment adjusted.
5-6 Good to go, the player is ready willing and able. This game he is as reliable as he was back in his prime.
PITA, but it seems more like the way things are for a real player. Add a -1 or 2 for cold weather, and its just like when I try to play pick up games again. Of course the hangover rules would really hurt

Hmmmm....
It seems to me that we're seeing an increasing number of "realism" arguments these days. Did anyone notice that we're playing a game where Trolls are throwing goblins almost half the length of the pitch, and wizards are pacing the sidelines.
Let's not let too much realism get in the way of good simple rules.

I think one of the major flaws of the current Niggling Injury rule is the following:
Either the (overpowered) player passes his Niggle Roll, and is fully operational causing 25 casualties (Enjoyment, remember?). OR The player fails his Niggle Roll and there is your passing team without any thrower at all...
So I would like to see Niggles rolled (again) for every drive. The Numbers posted show that this would on average not make Niggles "worse" or "better" but in my oppinion it would make them "better" because it does not leave you stuck without a key player for an entire game.
I can think of a lot of tactical things that would become relevant if the rule was tweaked that way. If my opponent had a lot of niggles, I'd certainly try to score a lot or even let him score to niggle out his players and so on.
In conclusion this would be an improvement to the game and an easy to play rule since it would play exactly the same way a KO'ed does.
