That's what a lot of folks seem to believe ... its just not true.
Look the MBBL finishes it 2nd round today. We have some of the best coaches out there and we have our far share of Elf and Skaven teams. 40 teams over 2 rounds = 40 games played. Total Field Goals scored to date in the MBBL: 4.
One of the basic rules to say that something impacts drastically is to show drastic impact ... I'm not seeing it. Even by the folks that looked forward to the Kicking rules being used to prove how broken they are are not scoring with them. The odds of a kick working almost always means you'd be better off trying for a TD. Don't know if you've seen the kicking rules as they stand now ... if not look at the AG roll to get the kick off:
Code: Select all
AGILITY TABLE
==========================================
Player's AG 1 2 3 4 5 6+
D6 roll required 6+ 5+ 4+ 3+ 2+ 1+
Kicking Modifiers
-----------------
Kicking the Ball +0
Per opposing tackle zone on the player -1
Attempting to kick a field goal -1
Attempting a Field Goal from
a Wide Zone square -1
In fact ... I'm almost to the point where I think one of the biggest complaints about the rules the point changes for scoring TD and FG can be removed and you just say its a scoring attempt and make them both worth 1 point. Chet's league is currently testing this. If in his league it doesn't seem out of line, the MBBL will try it for Season 3. If we do this then we'll make FG the same as TD (ie worth 3 SPPs).
Oh and as for a tactic option really only for the agile/fast teams ... 2 of the 4 field goals were scored by Orcs and Halflings ... why ... because fast/agile teams have better odds usually to just walk into the End Zone and you don't need to roll dice to do that.
The current kicking rules are very balanced. It is in no way a gimme play even for Skaven GRs or WE Catchers. In fact a lot of the time such players are going to just turn the ball over. Also 2 players with Pass Block do a world of hurt to a kicking game.
I won't rehash it all. The bottom line is the rules we are testing show the kicking rules to be a good addition to the game that does not create imbalance. As soon as someone proves to me otherwise I'll listen. But I just watched one of the most dramatic plays in my life for a team beaten into the ground to score a FG in OT to win the game. Its a hard sell at this point to convince me that they are broken without proof. Even Relborn has said the rules his league used were a lot more generous to the kickers as he was probably uses the BB Annual rules ... that's fine. Chet revamped the rules when he realized that the kicking didn't work the way he wanted to. I really like the new rules and what you can do with them.

I know my Halfling team is saving up for a Kicker. Skills to give in order, Dirty Kick, Pooch Kick, Punt .. with Strong Leg on doubles.
