Personal targets

Post by Duke Jan »

After some discussions about the Spirit of BloodBowl it became clear to me that the game's focus is moving more and more to winning being the only thing that matters in the game. Fun is now defined by win percentages, not by 5 5+ dodges a GFI and a kill to stop your opponent from a touch down at all costs, even if that TD won't cost you the game but failing a dodge might kill your starplayer. It is a statistical freak occurrence and as such unfair and should be eliminated. On the other hand people are stalling for 6 turns against 3 gobbos and a troll in tournaments.

So here is the idea: personal objectives. It can be used in a tournament for bonus points or might give you an extra Fan Factor or other reward in league matches. Before the match each team draws a card from a deck for his own race. If the secret objective on this card is achieved the bonus is awarded. The bonus assignments might be: "Score two or more touch downs with the same player". "Seriously injure or kill the player with most SPP on your opponent's side". "Make a long pass".

Hi Jan,
being at opposite ends about balance, I'm happy to report that the crazy things that you describe is what I love about BB. I love trying to beat the odds, and I don't want BB to become chess (which I think is what you think it'd become of the bottom teams were buffed and the top teams nerfed). Heck - I even love the LRB5 cards. Yep - you could potentially "lose to a card", but that's all in good fun. (In fact, I love the cards even more for being a deterrent against stalling :))

And - I love your idea.
I don't know if it would work for league play, but I think they're an awesome idea for tournaments.

Coming up with, say, 6 cards for each species would be cool. Tricky, but cool.
I don't think that the cards need to be "balanced" (i.e. equally easy to achieve), but I do think that the harder ones should carry greater reward.
I.e. if you have "make an interception" the prize could be "the player gains an MVP" or "gains a free skill".

Interesting.... :)
Cheers
Martin

If BB were just about the winning/losing I just wouldn't be interested at all.

Track stuff and keep records of it. Those things become as interesting as the wins for some people. People round my way really do care that the player with 1006 career rushing yards in 104 attempts retired at the end of last season.

Mission objectives wouldn't do it for me but entirely up for supporting people who come up with things that make their own local interests better. Something that brings Cards into the mainstream will always get my support. Go Cards.

Maybe the reward could be an extra MVP for the player who completes the target? You might not risk your star players, but it would be a great way to skill up rookies. Make them prove themselves for the team and all that :)

That would be a nifty house rule to try out. Also, you could turn the card idea into a meta-game: you get style points for every objective you accomplish. Then, at the end of the season or tourny, you hand out a most stylish award :)
