Is the Master Chef really worth 150K? If so, why are they proposing he be made a free head coach?

They aren't.

The current freeboot rules in the LRB for the Master Chef gives you a D6 roll at the beginning of each half. On a 1, you get 0 rerolls, 2-3 = 1, 4-5 = 2, and 6 = 3 rerolls from your opponent. For 50k.

The new rules are that the Master Chef is free, BUT he only rolls one D6 at the beginning of each half and on a 1 gets zero and a 2+ gets 1 reroll.

As you can see ... big difference. You can also "freeboot" special ingredients per a game to make the stew smell better and more tempting. For every 20k you spend on the Chef, you get an extra D6 to roll to steal rerolls.

I think 150k for permanent LRB, 50k for freeboot LRB, and the new experimental rules are all balanced for the Master Chef.

Hmm, i wouldn't really call this balanced ... the new experimental rules give Halfling teams a serious uplift:

For the old 50K freebooter you had a chance of 83.3% to steal at least one, 50% to steal at least 2 and only 16.7% to steal 3 RRs.

With the new rule you get the chance of stealing one for 83.3% for free. With spending only 40K (=3 rolls), you get the chance of 99.5% of steal at least one, 96.7% to steal at least two and 80.1% to steal 3 (ouch).

I'm not argueing that the new rule is bad, it gives the Flings a little more bite and they really deserve it.

But in comparison, these two rules are not balanced at all :)

Maybe because your math is a little bit off:

Okay old rules, you freebooted for 50k and got the following:

0 rerolls = 17%
1 reroll = 83%
2 rerolls = 50%
3 rerolls = 17%

With the experimental rules, for nothing, you'll get:

0 rerolls = 17%
1 reroll = 83%

If you spend 40k for the Master Chef you'll get:

0 rerolls = .5%
1 reroll = ???
2 rerolls = ???
3 rerolls = 58%

I'll fill these in (the ???) in a bit .. but your numbers are too high ... pretty sure of it.

That said, both stunty teams are getting minor legs up. Halfling to Free Master Chef ... Goblins = free weapon each game. I presonally have no probems with either of these and still think they are balanced. Is it better ... yup ... but that doesn't mean I don't think they were all balanced out when compared to what team they were for.

Hmm, my bad, tiny glitch in my calculation:

new rules with +40K =3 dice:

0 rerolls = .5% = 1/216
1 reroll = 99.5% = (216-1)/216
2 rerolls = 92.6% = (216-15-1)/216
3 rerolls = 58% = (216-75-15-1)/216

still waaay better than the old freebooter and thus these two rule variants are not balanced (this is the bottom line of my post).

I like the new rule, although it's quite powerful if a fling coach gets lucky with his money rolls. I'd not want to go against a Halfling team with 100k cash in the treasury ... losing 4-6 RRs (= all in most cases) will hurt every team.

How will the freebooting of ingredients work in a one-off game or tournament environment? If you are allowed to build a 920k Halfling team and keep 80k for freebooting 4 more Cook rolls every game ... OUCH!

Dont forget every fling coach i know, tries to set aside enough money for 1-2 new flings a game. Most fling coaches wont be spending too much each game for extra dice on the rerolls.

Has everyone forgotten that Halflings (and Goblins) arent' supposed to be serious contenders?

If you think the new Halfing Chef and the free weapon for Goblins makes them even "remotely" serious contenders ... wells, Snots, I think you are smoking something.

The extra rerolls will do very little to help my Fling team as I normally would start with 4 to 5 rerolls anyway and most teams really don't need their rerolls to beat Flings ... really they don't.

The free secret weapon for the Goblins sure as heck isn't going to do anything but add flavor.

And remember both of these changes in the MBBL came at the expense of removing their LRB 120k Ogre option.

I think almost anyone I know would agree that 2 Ogres for these teams is more powerful than either of the rules that they got in return.

My guess if you are asking me. In a one off game, I'd allow the freebooting of ingredients.

In a TR 100 resetting environment, I'd allow the team the one 2+ roll, but not allow them to purchase any extra ingredients (OR I'd make the ingredients cost 60k (since wizards cost 150k for tournaments which is 3x their freeboot cost)).

After thinking about it ... I'd probably allow the extra ingredients for 60k per an extra D6 as that would be in line with the normal tournament costs.

We'll see how the rules work first before getting balled up in this one.

I'd just like to say out of personal experience here that I'd rather see the 150k permenant LRB option for the flings. Interestingly enough in the league that I ran one of our most successful coaches was the halflings coach. He had 2 very powerful treemen (one with movement 3 and piling on, one with guard and block), and scored 2-3 touchdowns a game with a TTM offense. One of the big benefits for him was the fact that he was able to start the league with 5 rerolls...and good rolling with the master chef would usually give him 7 or 8 for a half. This all coupled with the fact that he rolled RIDICULOUSLY well all of the time made him a challenge for almost everyone.

However...as the league went on he started to win less and less. Still, it was interesting to watch him cause more injuries per game than the Chaos team was.

Sam

P.S. He used the Treebeard model from Lotr as one of his treemen. Since he already game with halfing "ammo" it was a great model

I am a big proponent of the permanent chef for the halflings (paid for at 150k). I think the current rules in LRB for chef effects give the Halflings there only advantage. The Gobbos have better stats, and secret weapons for the play making and the fun. Halflings should be able to steal the RR of the opponents. It's amusing and opens up the game to alittle challenge at least.

I think the Dwarves should get the Alchemist permanently also (allow a reroll of match winning or something.) There is another thread about it here
viewtopic.php?t=5363

And if this or similar was done it would negate the "inconsistency" argument from anyone. The Undead, Dwarves and Halflings are already different in wizard department. Its not a real big stretch to allow the Halfers a small advantage in a permanent wizard. They spend too much money replacing players to really use them otherwise.

Check out the rules for the Dwarf and Halfling teams here:

I think you missed the experimental rules in BB Mag #7.
