When the ball is thrown successfully to an empty hex does it stop there or does it bounce 1 hex in a d6 direction from the target hex?

Incorrect!
LRB6, page 13, Bouncing Balls
If the ball is... (blah, blah, blah)...
or a square where a thrown ball lands is unoccupied (blah, blah, blah) then it will bounce.
And it is one square (d8) according to the scatter template....
