Wow, this one is hard to explain. Unfortunately it's gotten associated in a racial way and is something of an unfair stereotype. Mostly thanks to that commercial. It was marketed mostly to African Americans who wanted to be cooler. Like Billy Dee Williams. But what happened is it became part of American pop culture as a stereotypical drink for the "smooth talking poser" who was better than the poor upbringing he actually had. It's pretty offensive actually.

In the end, it's just a strong drink with a bad aftertaste.

I'll find a way to pin it on Kilowog, as sharing a mic between the gentle tones of Mat and vociferous tomfoolery of Pete probably didn't work out so well.
