Rat Ogre skill
Okay, since Big Guys can no longer just get general skills. What should be first choice be for a Rat Ogre be? If I roll doubles I know I'm getting block first thing. But on a normal roll I'm really not sure if I want, Break Tackle, Multiple Block, or Guard. All would be nice as well. I'll probably end up with at least two of them as I very rarely roll doubles on skills for some reason.
But my quandry is which do I get first?

to me, that's the #1 argument against taking away gen skill access for the big guys, even though i see the upside of it too.
it means their options for advancement are absolute crap unless you roll doubles. the only REALLY good st skill for them is mighty blow and most of them come with that. after that guard is ok. most of the time they don't use break tackle, and multiple block is too gimmicky. stand firm is nice, but it takes doubles too...
i think it would encourage people to dump their big guys after first roll if they didn't get doubles. i know i would generally, unless i was super short on players and/or money.

A major intention of removing GEN access was to limit the development of big guys. The problem before was that a rookie Ogre (for example) was unreliable, as they were supposed to be. But one skill in they get Block, and suddenly become the best player on the team. Then they can take Pro next skill. That is not what big guys were supposed to be about. They are always supposed to be risky.
Guard is a very useful skill for a WA. Even if you fail the WA roll, the player retains his tackle zone, and so can lend assists, and hence use Guard.
As MattShepherd said, if you want to play your WA less conservatively, Break Tackle can be really effective. It is risky, as big guys were born to cause turnovers, but I've seen Break Tackling wild animals be very intimidating.

Break Tackle is probably going to be what I get. Unless I get a linemen with Gaurd in which case I will be picking mutliple block as gaurd and my big guy will allow me to most likely get 2 dice on 2 people a lot of the time. Unless I'm miss reading things.
But even then, gaurd probably wouldn't be picked over claw. So eh. Who know.

back when minos could mutate, before the skill/trait distinction, i had a mino with stunty and break tackle. talk about a menace...he could blitz anyone on the field, anywhere anytime. good times.
and the model conversion was hilarious too. basically no torso, just short legs and a big head with horns.

Which I think very pointley supports the reason General Access (block) was removed..Irishragan wrote:heh, see this is the exact problem I've run into. All the choices in my opinion are good to take on a normal skill roll. And I can't really make a desicion.
Because before it was. "Oh my Rat Ogre has block and has earned his 2nd skill, which really really good combo should I give him now ?"
Personally I'd go with Break Tackle to keep him mobile and able to hit valuable pieces when he blitzes instead of the fodder tieing him up. It will help him skill faster. After that I would take the guard -as he'll be able to move a great deal to place it just where you want it so your another rat can blitz.
Drive a Rat Ogre through a wall and watch the gutter runners scwarm through the ensuing hole.

As it stands now, it´s only half a year until the Vault becomes official, so that Big Guys get more choices in the STR-category:
Juggernaut!
This skill seems to be made exactly for the rat ogre, i´m at least having so much fun with it!
Blitzing on 2+ with juggernaut and frenzy, you gotta love it!
If you really don´t want to play vault, take guard, break tackle is a little to risky for my taste.
2+ to blitz followed by 2+ dodge is about 1/3 of ruining your blitz for that turn, pretty much I´d say.
On the other side, i´ve seen today 2 TDs by a Lizzard team, one by a Sauri who catched the bouncing ball in 3 TZs and the other by the Krox, who made the ball carrier fall with his prehensil tale just to step on the ball and go into the Endzone.

Currently an ex-Blood Bowl coach, most likely to be found dying to Armoured Skeletons in the frozen ruins of Felstad, or bleeding into the arena sands of Rome or burning rubber for Mars' entertainment.
