New league considering Ogres
At my store blood bowl has become practically dead and is no longer even existant. I know it is probably because of all the crap that goes on, but luckily due to myself and a couple of other guys we are reforming the league, and createing a new Blood Bowl league. My friend is going to be the Comish, and I am second in command or for all you Star Trek fans "Number 1". Well after all that blah blah blah, here is the REAL question.
The league will be one season per. No perpetual, unless we start a new version of one later on. I have no clue what teams will be, but it will be approximately 16-20 games long. So I know how to play any team type, doesn't make me the best player but I know how to win with all race types. I am considering using Ogres.
Now here is the catch...in my league you pay to enter, and you pay to buy the team. If you don't have a team or pieces to make that team you can't use them. You can use other Gamesworkshop pieces, or other Ogre products, but not like a gutterrunner. Comish and I would allow it, but the store owner wants to make money and have us buy the teams. The Ogre team can roughly cost me 120. I don't mind paying it because it can be fun but the question is...is it a good investment? Not because of how my store plays, but beacause is the team any good? The teams I own are Khemri, and Necromantic. I wanted to use the ultimate bashers.
I need to know a few things, and anyone that will answer I will be quite happy with.
1) Are Ogres worth the purchase?
2) Are there any proxy Ogres I can use that are good looking pieces?
3) Can Ogres win?
4) Are they a good team?
5) Is it smart to use them in a one shot season.
6) Final question is what do the team lists for Ogres look like. If it helps at all my league uses the LRB rules so feel free to answer.

I'll assume LRB 4.0.Bizzy wrote:1) Are Ogres worth the purchase?

1) I have to admit a full GW Ogre team is a little pricey if you buy the BB one.
2) I've seen some pretty good conversions of the GW Ogre Kingdom plastic Ogres ... probably the cheapest GW figs you could use.
3) Yes ... but not often ... its not a team you use to win a league ... honestly ... its not.
4) Ogre teams only get any good when developed ... early on its a pot shot to get victory.
5) If you want to win ... honestly .... no
6) The current official Ogre team list is:
0-12 Ogres 120,000 5/5/2/9 Big Guy, Bone-head, Mighty Blow, Thick Skull, Throw Team-Mate ST access
0-6 Goblins 40,000 6/2/3/7 Dodge, Right Stuff, Stunty AG access
70k rerolls

You will have to start with a roster of 5 Ogres, 6 Gobbos and 1 rr 9 ff (in case you use normal 1,000,000 gp). Now that's not a very good roster and you dont really wont to drop to 2 ff in order to get the 2nd rr. But if you can collect some good money from first couple of games and get to 2 rr and more ogres things will start to go better.
However, buying the team (which would be at least 8 ogres, preferably even more) for LRB4 rules is not that good idea since in LRB5 (pbbl 1.11 atm) the team can only field 6 ogres.
So no, I wouldn't buy an ogre team.

Of course, you can hope that your league won't ever be using the LRB 5 Ogre rules, so you can have a proper Ogre team.
Tbh, it's something you need to discuss with the league commish. If you're likely to switch to the PBBL rules in the future, then either don't take Ogres now, or only ever get 6 Ogre players.

All very valid points I think I am going to talk to my comish about his idea on what to build with the league. I notice a couple of problems in my league this is why we are doing the one shot deals.
There are a few guys that are in the league that have solid teams and have become nearly unbeatable. The one guy that I am refering to more so is this Chaos player we have. His team is insane. Nearly all of his players have Claws, if not Claw/RSC. The solution? Kill his guys and foul them, well we can barely do that and if we do, he will foul us back, and do other nasty things with his claw. It is a dangerous guy to play and nearly everyone loses to him. So we decided to just do the one off seasons to end dynasty's such as his and to end the unfair scale of TR300 teams playing TR 150, because the handicap table doesn't work really.
What I am going to try and do is figure out a way to regulate this type of dynasty build while still giving some sort of advantage to a player who has built up his team for 3 leagues. Either that or side-by-side leagues to make a fair advantage for all types of TR.
But lets go on this subject. The one shot league idea sticks and I have not enough power to work out kinks to make the rest of my idea fair. What team is a good choice in a one shot league? If you see what teams I have owned you might be able to help me out with my selection for the upcoming league.
Thanks for all advice thus far and all that you will continue to give.

if the root of your problem is that the handicap table isnt working well for you (given the TR300 Claw/RSC team versus a TR150 "going-to-get-their-butts-kicked" team) you really ought to look in the Playtest Vault forum of TBB and look for the sticky thread for the PBBL 1.11 ruleset. As of ~May, those rules are going to become LRB5, and the inducement system does a much better job of handling such an imbalance between two teams than the LRB4 handicap system does. The only thing is, a LOT of other things have changed in the PBBL rules as well so I'm not sure how keen your league will be on switching over to the new rules in their entirety.
dont mean to hijack this thread into a Vault discussion, but it does seem to be the most logical choice for the situation being presented.

As to what team shines in an LRB4 league, it depends on the length of the league. For 10ish games, then Amazon and Dwarves shine for sure. I think that Orcs and Skaven are also good. Chaos and the Elves are difficult in such a short league. Don't have too much experience with the other teams, so can't really comment.
If you league is longer, then it depends on the length.
