2nd ARBBL?
Ok, this is going to be part discussion, part wish-list, part "is it worth it".
With the demise of Spiky, there seems to be a gap in the calender (in the south at least), so I'm considering running a 2nd tournament in late October (maybe early Nov, depends on rotas and things).
Question 1: Is there a need for such a tournament?
If I did run it I'd like it to be different from the ARBBL, rather than just a "part 2" (been there, done that), and I'd also like it to be a tourney that rewards overall skill, rather than just being about a "one-race specialist".
So the (basic) suggestion is this:
All the races are put into Tiers: (the following are just examples)
Tier 1: Amazon, Drawf, Wood Elf etc
Tier 2: Khemri, Human, Pro Elf etc
Tier 3: Vampire, Underworld, Chaos
Tier 4: Halfling, Gobli, Ogre, (other stunty cup legal teams)
Each coach would get 5+ "tier points" to spend on the races they'd play, but they'd have to play a different race each day. So I might decide to play Human(2) and Underworld(3), moodygit might decide to play Amazon(1) and Goblin(4), and BigBelcher (being a masochist) decides to play Halflings(4) and Ogres(4).
There would be no "bonus" skills for the lower tiers, and each day's roster would get 5 extra skills to start with, no more, no less. TV120, cards and all inducements allowed (no wizards).
Question 2: Would anyone be interested in a tournament like this?
(Question 2a: Is there already a tournament like this that I've missed?)
Champion would be the player with most points, most TD and Cas would be given combined on races etc. So for example, you might win 3 games taking Skaven, but if you suck with Ogres, you'll not be in the running for champion.
Downsides: if I understand NAF policy correctly, it would have to be listed as two separate one-day tournaments.
Knowing there would be Stunty teams about, makes Dwarfs/CDs overly attractive (partially off-set by not knowing what day they'd be playing)?
Ranking for day 1 to day 2 still Swiss?
Or do I just forget doing something different, and run a normal tournament.
Edit: Draft rule pack added on p.4

Re: 2nd ARBBL?
As much as I would love a second ARBBL and your proposed rule set is interesting I wouldn't mind you running something with a more eccentric rule set. You run a stunning tourny and I don't doubt you could pull off something Chaos Cup-ish.
On a side note I was looking around for venues in the Yeovil and Taunton area to run a tourny around the same time of year, maybe a colab?

Which tier would the Khorne roster be in?
I like the idea and I love the ARBBL so more of that is always good. However, I'm not sure that the October gap is the real problem going on in the Southern tournament scene at the moment. The big problem is that we have most of our events crammed into a couple of months during the summer. Not sure how to resolve that issue though.

Push it towards the end of October and use a Halloween theme rule set.

Re: 2nd ARBBL?
Had a brief PM conversation with Pippy, and these seems it might be possible.
Another thing that's come to mind is that I'd need everyone's races in advance, as (I think) the best way to draw each day would be by NAF ranking for the first round? Or just for round 1, then normal Swiss?

I dont think there should be a problem with getting everyone to pre register a team. It just means Lycos will have to make up his mind before the day like everyone else!Darkson wrote: the best way to draw each day would be by NAF ranking for the first round? Or just for round 1, then normal Swiss?

Re: 2nd ARBBL?
I think November rather than October would be good, there are a lot of tournament in the Midlands and East Anglia in October.
Two separate but linked one day tournaments over the weekend with an overall champion sounds a good idea.

Re: 2nd ARBBL?
The distance for me atm is probably a bit far (maybe in a few years when the kids are older), but...
my main concern with the ruleset is that you'd be expecting people to have 2 teams ready and available - I know most tournament players are likely to have that, and people could always borrow, but 2 things strike me:
1. people with 2 teams may not necessarily have enough "lower tier" teams to fill up the required points. Maybe instead, you should say people get more points for using lower tier teams?
2. its possibly not the most New Coach friendly tournament around

Re: 2nd ARBBL?
1. That would defeat the object of the tourney. I want the winner to be someone that proved themselves with 2 races of differing power levels, not just one. And I've always found the community is excellent for "sharing" teams.
2. I agree somewhat, but on the other hand it's easier than other tourneys (such as the regular ARBBL) as there's no bonus skills for lesser races.

Re: 2nd ARBBL?
I would love another ARBBL each year Its well run and nicely within the 'no hotel required' boundry from my house!
Different races is something i would really enjoy, i asked a long time ago about the possibility of having a different race for each match, but have since had to concede its highly unlikely to ever work hehe

Have you thought about running a team tourney? Can't think of any of these currently happening in the south.

Thought about it, but is there the call for it? The Spiky Challenge never repeated.
Plus didn't lunchmoney talk about doing one?

I was, but not here (tbh honest I cant recall discussing it online, but there you go.....) I am toying with an idea for Zombie Hordes for my 2014 Open, so a long way off yet.Darkson wrote:Thought about it, but is there the call for it? The Spiky Challenge never repeated.

Did I mention it as idea for an "Exiles Presents: xxx"? If I did, that will also be a long way off as 2013 will have another Speedbowl.
So basically don't worry about stepping on my toes with a team event (and after I shamelessly yoinked your 2009 rules for my own, you are more than welcome to yoink an idea back )
I want to do a team event now! Make ARBBL2 a team thing!

I would definitely be interested as long as it doesn't clash with BunkerBowl in October....
