right c'mon chaps i hope you've all calmed down now.

as far as i can see i have no problems with the criticism so far given by both salacious and deathwing. in fact as mine was one of the entries which has been criticised, all of the stuff that's been said has helped out my painting no end. in fact i've painted another model over the weekend that's coming along very nicely indeed.

OK, as promised. Pics of my effort on the same phig included to help illustrate (bear in mind that everybody has their own styles, and what works for me may not necessarily be the best method for everybody):

Neatness: It's fundamentally important. Without a good base it'll impossible to get a good result. Take the time to clean the flash off properly. Your valk looks a little rough on the insides of the legs, and very noticeable flash line on the back of the r/h helmet wing. Improperly cleaned flash detracts horribly from the final result.
I know you've corrected the flesh over the chain, but neat painting is vital. A properly cleaned and neatly painted fig that's just blocked out looks miles better than one that's been highlighted etc if there's flash showing and signs of sloppy painting evident.

Highlighting/Shading: Use more mixes in between. When going from one colour up to another I'll use a minimum 2 (if the colours are close), but more often 3, something like a 70/30, 50/50 and 30/70. There's about 8 or 9 degrees of shading on the shirt on my valk using 3 base colours. Another thing you can do to help the smoothness is to apply several (very) thin washes on the base colour, IIRC I used about 3 on these. It should be thin enough that you'll hardly notice the difference on a single wash, but built up gradually it'll smooth out the shading and just tie it all together better.

Contrast: Looks like the silver parts are just blocked out, there's not enough definition between the silver and the flesh for example. Needs either black lining or darker shading where the two areas meet to to define the different areas better. Even a simple black wash followed by repainting the original silver in all but the recesses would help immensely. Likewise the hair needs a darker wash and/or lighter drybrush to provide more contrast.
Try and think through the colour scheme, for example the hairbands are just 'lost' against the shirt because they're the same colour. Likewise the helmet wings. Maybe keeping the shirt a slightly darker shade of blue by not highlighting it up so much worked have helped here..there's simply too many adjacent areas of the top half painted the same colours IMO. And I'm not sure what you were trying to achieve with the mouth, but it doesn't work for me.

Point about the base has already been made. :)

OK, hope that'll help some and make up a little for my perceived rudeness.
One last point is that you need to be your own worst/harshest critic. I am. (I can see a few things that I'm not happy with on my fig for example, there's definately a lot of room for improvement.) Aim high and pick holes in your own work and see what you can do better next time.

(More pics on this thread and a (pretty big) one here).

I hope you will because your mini nearly damaged my eyes. Even Kadu-C is better than you.
I think Woody was very nice to you.

And next time, use painting, not photoshop to highlight your skin...

Since it looks like we're openly discussing now ... # 10 was mine, and no I didn't photoshop it, I just painted the face kinda freaky. Livin in teh desert might do that to me, so I figgered... why not. :)

DW (or anyone else) got any thoughts on the desert dog? I liked the pants over the torso myself...

Congrats ewan

a pitty no one found my entry cool
U think the idea that he is to unrealistic a bit weak, comeone it is a fantasy game but its okay, the thick paint on his pants is because I tried making checkers on his pants but it became a disaster and I had to recover it.

a deserved win though !

nice work everyone !!

next competition !!

thanks to the git again !

Thank you very much to Evil Git and all who contributed 8)

There are a couple of points I would like to address about this painting comp -

Its a shame many of the "big hitters" stayed away (for whatever reason) from the comp as it was a bit of fun and also would have been a good showcase for people to see the talent of those concerned and also inspiration points where "lesser painters" could improve.

The few posts about "basing - whether important or not" The comp rules did say it was optional but having an unfinished base could have been detrimental to votes on the entry where a finished base would have "completed" the mini, well painted or not.(even though it shouldn't have mattered)

I had the hardest time painting that mini and said so in the e-mail to Evil git! The only varnish available (GW - Falkirk) was "Purity seal (satin)" and was told GW don't make Matt varnish anymore because the last batch they had produced, sprayed white!

Whether the can I had was a bad batch or whether it is just bad stuff - After spraying, it kinda melted the paint. Melting is not quite accurate but when I was about to use the static grass, I checked out the mini and no lie, it looked like it was covered in cobwebs (long strands of varnish had attached themselves to each other) plus, through handling, even though the varnish was dry, the paint had slid off the metal and her nose was by her cheek. I had to push the paint back in place by using the eraser on the end of a pencil. That was why her face was a mess

Does anyone know of a good Matt Varnish spray that is available in the UK? - Brand and Store please.

I hope everyone had a good time anyway and that even more people contribute in the next "Evil Gits' TBB painting comp"

Thanks again - Ewan

Congrats Ewan. And cheers to Evil Git for running it, and doing the website and all that.

Here's a view you didn't see for some reason.

Bring on the "big hitters". I'll put my back into it next time.

I m just a few days back from Brasil and so not much time to check all post here at TBB . So i voted today as i thought, today will be the final day. Just in case its interesting for someone, i voted for #5 before #9 as second choice... kind of personal taste i guess !
alot of the big hitters (or should that be brushers) are sitting this one out. maybe they want to see how this one turns out before hand. maybe they're just running scared of the new blood coming through. maybe they just didn't want to buy some phigs miniatures. who knows.
not sure if i´m a "big hitter", but i´m realy sorry, that i had to drop out of this competition. Because of personal reason, which i didnt expected to turn up before my holiday ... i already ordered and got some of Phils minis.
hopefully the next one will have a better turnout though.
I will do my best to " make " it this way...

I will not give comments about same "flaming" here... i just dont want, it will turn here at TBB like sometimes at CMON :(

well. somtimes its nice when not all the "big hitters" take part as it gives other people a chance to atleast to try, its not having the best painted mini, even tho that helps, its about trying different techniques and nice converting for others to see,
yes i agreee the effort on the base was poor DW and hopfully next time he and ruins the fig, but he took your critism, he will have a better attempt like a "learning curb" for less better painters

and well ewan i did vote for you, so wheres my cut of the winnings like you promised... i mean.. errm welldone

well done for the running etc
