Pro or High Elves

Post by Cephme »

I am playing in a 8 week (plus 3 weeks of playoffs and an all star game, schedule based so you do not get to pick your opponents) league starting in a few weeks. Since there is only one elf team (woodies) in the league I have decided to play either Pro Elfs or High Elfs. I want to provide some diversity so am ruling out woodies, and I really like the wardancer stat line catchers so want to go with one of these teams. In such a league which of the teams would you go for?

I was thinking either

High
2 Dragon Warriors
9 Line Elfs
2 RR
7 FF

OR

Pro
2 Blitzers
1 Catcher
1 Thrower
7 Line Elfs
2 RR
9 FF

or

2 Blitzers
9 Line Elfs
3 RRs
9 FF

Thoughts?

I'd go Pro eleves, cause I like them better! I think they are also a better team in a short term league as you can get a better starting team, by having more positionals. The 8 AV of high elves can really help if you play 10+ games though.

I'd go with your first Pro elf team as I prefer a better starting team over linemen team with more rerolls (which is a minority opinion I believe).

Go for the wins right away!!

I'd pretty much agree. HE's advantages only really kick in later on (i.e. lower player turnover) so short leagues Elf teams will probably do better.

I'd also take the 2nd Elf roster.

i think the pro elves fluff is really weak, plus they are very close to wood elves, but if all you want is which is best, yeah, for 8 games, it is pro elves.

I agree with absent1 here - and with Ian as to the second roster.
Just remember - it's not because the elves have two guys who call themselves "blitzers" that the team as a whole doesn't break like glass...
So keep your linemen safe from harm or you'll quickly find yourself with just two blitzers standing.

Ok we had our rules meeting last night and teams from this season will be carrying over to next. As such we are now talking long term. I am thinking that swings the pendulum back toward HE. Thoughts?

For 8 games, I'd take the 1st roster of Pro Elves.
It's the one I took in my league: 4 wins and 1 draw for the moment ! :D
However, I've never had yet a 12 players team... :-?

Go HE....by season two you should be kicking some butt. High elves rock at higher TR ranges. Like some have said, the higher AR will help you in the long run!

Add no natural strength disadvantage either to the high elfs. Though I have yet to witness a highly succesful high elf team in the short term.

For a short league I would certainly go for the pro-elves. And unless your house rules require a high ff I would even be tempted to drop some ff in favor of more positionals.

I created this team http://fumbbl.com/FUMBBL.php?page=team& ... _id=146806 for an upcoming knock out turney on Fumbbl.

Math: I dropped 5 ff in comparison to your 1st roster. Let's assume we are playing an opponent with ff9. The combined ff drops from 18 to 14. This means the expected number of fans drops from 63k to 49k. This means the expected winnings drop from a d6+3 to a d6+2. This effect could be cancelled out because with a roster heavy on positionals your chance of winning the 1st match increase.

I am aware that in the long run (after game 5) the lesser investment in ff starts to cost money. Still in a tournament as short as this I would always prefer to have a strong start, loads of points and perhaps ff increases.

My Bulls have the "Thin Skull" trait. After every block they make, roll a D6. On a 1+ they get ko-ed and stay in the ko-box for the rest of the game.
