Total free-for-all buy-everything-from-scratch teams

Post by MattShepherd »

I'm sure... SURE... this has been mentioned before, but couldn't find it in a search. I might just be a doofus.

But fluff aside, has anyone ever considered just attaching a price to everything and letting people build teams from absolute scratch? Some sort of scaled system so ST1 costs very little ST2 a bit more, ST3 a chunk, ST4 costs rather a lot, ST5 is expensive, and ST6 is abhorrent.

And so on across the board -- less expensive for "starter" skills like dodge and block, more expensive for "advanced" skills like Frenzy and Stand Firm.

Again, from a fluff perspective, it's totally weak. But from a strategic perspective, it might be interesting to see what people build. I mean, you COULD get an uberplayer with high everything and crazy armor, but then you'd only have enough cash left to build the equivalent of zombies for the other 10 players on the team, etc. etc.

You'd probably wind up with alot of "super Norse (or 'zons)" with all the same basic stat lines but with lots of starting skills to compisate.

An easier idea would be to allow people to start with soem veteran players (paying extra for their extra skills) instead of starting with an all rookie line up.

Not exactly what you are talking about but take a look at the robot team on Galaks site.

Not exactly, you're right, but so close that I'd like to know what became of this team -- was it ever extensively played and if so, how'd it work out?

Galak?

I discussed this (at length?) with someone else on here.

The problem we ran into was the one Torg mentioned. It is very possible to create nasty teams this way.

One option is to still split things into positions (IE you have to buy a skill category before you can take skills from that category) and then you could price the categories according to their worth. Passing would probably be bottom with general next, then strength and then agility and finally mutations.

It's an idea that I really like because it stops all this talk about what teams are broken and what teams are a joke.

The problem is that homogenization is a likely result.

I assume from your post that you found that link ... well here are the stats from the MBBL2 where that is a legal race to play.

Robot
86 games
57 wins
28 losses
1 tie
66.86% win rate
TDs for/against - 164:105
CAS for/against - 126:128
Average TDs per game For/Agasinst: 1.93:1.24
Average CAS per game For/Against: 1.48:1.51
Number of teams of this race played in the league to date: 22

The above is lifetime ratings and the Robot team used to be a lot stronger than the current MBBL2 version as we've tone the team down twice (this is the 3rd version of the rule for the team).
==============

The Robot team has also been coached by 2 of the best players in our league (for instance langelli's Robot team is 12 wins - 0 losses) before he semi-retired them. Brian Hixon's team almost one the first season of the MBBL2. (again both of these teams were before I sat down with langelli and worked out version 3 of this team).

We have currently have 1 Robot team active this season. He is currently 0 wins - 1 loss for this sesaon: http://www.midgardbb.com/MBBL2/teamView.php?teamid=459

I'm now in a wait and see mode. Version 2 of the Robot team was pretty balanced ... the fine tuning of it for Version 3 makes me pretty confident we got it where it needed to be.

The other thing I'll add is that we have definitely NOT seem homogenious results with this team at all.

I've seen teams create basher teams, runner teams, mixed bash and run. I've seen massively armoured teams and teams that spent more on speed. It really has been an interesting mix definitely not homgenious.

When a Human Lineman would cost you 90k ... you tend to see some creative solutions to the make your own players team that this offers.

i have to say, at first i tried to make a power team and it simply didn't work out... looks rather weak to me at TR 100 but with a lot of money it should be able to become really scary... IMO the possibility to have high av on everyone is a real problem because with av9 all around they will hardly get hurt ever.
