Halfling Chef and Overtime

Post by Ravage »

A few of my leaguemates were playing a makeup game the other day and I got a phone call (as resident league commish and rules zealot ;)) asking about this - I took my best guess at the answer but I wanted to see what the actual ruling is.

Halflings and Skaven go into OT. Skaven team has 3 RR's on their team sheet, Halflings also have 3. During the 2nd half, the Chef steals all three rerolls from the Skaven, bringing their total RR count to 6 for the half. And the end of the 2nd half, both teams are tied 3-3 - the flings still have 2RR left on their track.

I assume the rerolls left on the flings' side would carry over, since it makes logical sense they would use the "stolen" RR's before using their own. And I also assume that if the flings had 4 RR's left at the end of the half, they'd lose that 4th one since IMO they shouldnt be able to carry over stolen RR's into overtime since they dont carry from the 1st half to the 2nd, either. First of all, am I right in making that assumption? Or would they carry stolen RR's into OT?

Secondly, does the Chef get to roll for more rerolls at the beginning of overtime? While rerolls are not normally reset, obviously, and both teams can only bring with them any rerolls they had left over from the second half, I wasn't sure if the Chef still worked since his text says that his event occurs at the start of each half. I went with "yes", but afterwards wasn't sure if I made the correct call. Especially given the Q&A in LRB4 about how a Leader player will not award a new RR counter on the track, I'm beginning to believe that the chef also wouldn't do anything when OT begins. But I don't know.

As it turned out it didnt matter, since the Skaven received the kick and scored on the drive. But I would have felt badly if the flings were able to win simply because I allowed them to get more rerolls than they should have.

Thanks for an answer :) I know there may not be an "official" answer and possibly only interpretations, but I'm looking to see what others have to say about it.

The masterchef may NOT make another roll as this is only allowed at the start of a halftime, overtime is not a halftime. The stolen RRs from 2nd half DO carry over as the rules for overtime state "Any rerolls left...".

I would say yes to keeping the halfling RR for Overtime.

I would however allow them to keep above and beyond their normal number, but certainly not allow them to reuse their chef. There is simply (IMHO) no moment between the end of the 2nd half and the start of OT where you can use skills like Leader, the chefs ability, or normal RR restoration'.

1) Halfling Chef does not roll at the start of overtime.

2) Stolen re-rolls DO carry over to overtime.

3) A Halfling team can have more than 8 re-rolls without losing the extra. Technically there is no limit to the number of re-rolls a team can have. (actually I plan on deleting the 0-8 re-rolls from the LRB 5.0 as this was never used and may actually be used as ammo to say that Halflings max at 8 re-rolls when stealing.)

Galak

thanks for the input guys, and the "official" word galak. I figured if anyone could tell me how it worked it would be the Halfling coach ;)

In discussing with one of my leaguemates, I do concur that I probably made the wrong call. However, what led me down that path was the fact that the chef does say he rolls "at the start of each half". Overtime is a half, just an extra one. The rules lawyer in me knows I could argue the point until the cows come home, but obviously I understand the "intent" here. Just as a suggestion that perhaps something could be written into the book to clear that up. (Either in the chef description itself as a "at the beginning of the first and second halves" or in the OT rules discussing rerolls with a "chefs are not allowed to steal any rerolls at the beginning of this extra half" or something)
