Considering a store league

Post by Anonymous »

I was directed here from the SpecGames site, as this is ostensibly a forum with fewer topical rules. So here I go:

I'm considering starting up a new league at the local game store. Blood Bowl would certainly be unique, and with American Football season getting ready to ramp up, it feels timely.

So what do I need to know?

:)

rules come in useful mate

ok first off, hello! welcome to TBB :)

next, id reccoment buying the boxset for your club first. it comes with everything, and 2 teams to play with, a pitch, all the markers etc.. needed for a bloodbowl game. try a few starter games, get everyone familiar with the rules. then id start looking at other teams and see who likes what teams, hwo they play and so on. then get your league going. what we did and we love it now. best way to learn it to play

[ok not sure here but is the livingrulebook 5 - 'galaks' one - included in the new boxsets now or not? if it isnt you can download it from the spec. games site]

and have fun
'cause it rocks

Welcome to the club, guy. Hopefully you can find 7 or 8 other brave souls in Utah to play against. I'd also start off with LRB 5.0 (downloadable from SG now) and start playing with those rules straight away, to avoid any confusion in the rules switch. If you're hoping to hook football fans, then obviously don't schedule your league for Sundays.

Maybe if you find at least a few other guys, then each of you can buy a team on your own and then let everyone use them, so that people can get an idea of what they like / hate without shelling out too much $$ to find out.

Oh, of course. ;) I've nabbed the current living rulebook already, and am merrily reading away. I played way back when (I've still got my three-piece syrofoam pitch and everything)--I just figured I'd get back into it.

What's the word on 'official' miniatures anymore? GW doesn't really support Blood Bowl in an official capacity, right? That is, there's no real way (or reason) to register a Blood Bowl event the same way one would register a 40k Rogue Trader tournament, yes?

well yes and no. you can register tourneys and have national rankings and such like with rogue trader, but not thru GW.

check out the NAF at http://www.thenaf.net/

and join it. sure it costs $10 but you get cool blocking dice and then you get your tourney rankings and such.

now, if you want prize support... well that's a different story. i'd recommend trying to hit up the lgs where you play for that. if you bring in a decent number of coaches, and build up some BB sales they'd otherwise be missing, they might be willing to throw a bone back your way.

If your tournament is a decent size (say 10 or more folks) then you can check to see if the store you have it can get you some GW BB figs as prizes since they are still able to be ordered from GW. You can also try to get prize support from smaller Fantasy Football companies like Impact! Miniatures or Shadowforge Miniatures which have both been now to help tournaments out with prizes if they are more than a couple guys getting together and calling it a tournament.

Let me clarify what I'm asking. Does Games Workshop manage anything 'official' for Blood Bowl the way they do for, say, 40k?

If so, what?

If not, is it then correct to assume that there's no need for league rules to say "GW models only"?

GW has the 4 "Major" tournaments a year (UK has the Blood Bowl, US the Chaos Cup, Canada the Spike! and Germany the Dungeon Bowl). Individual stores (at least here in the UK) may, or may not, hold tiournaments or leagues, pretty much on the whim of the individual manager.
If not, is it then correct to assume that there's no need for league rules to say "GW models only"?
If you're not playing in a GW store, you can use anything you like.

Currently an ex-Blood Bowl coach, most likely to be found dying to Armoured Skeletons in the frozen ruins of Felstad, or bleeding into the arena sands of Rome or burning rubber for Mars' entertainment.

What Darkson said is correct ... there are 4 officially sponsered GW tournaments. GW stores might have rules for leagues run in their store ... but if you store is not a GW store ... use whatever figs you like.

Welcome to the board A lot of pretty sound advice so far.

Other companies worth checking out for figures can be found in main pages but core companies for FF minis include:

Shadowforge,
Impact,
Heresy
Hasslefree (limited but more coming)
Oh and GW but they are difficult to deal with.

I stock the full range of these in my store below as well as spares if you need to get started and want a few extras. Hopefully this helps.
