Spike Magazine 2008

Post by generaljason »

It was a hectic 2 months of prep for Mike and myself, booking the hotel, organizing the giveaways, ordering posters, trophies, and signing up 32 coaches, but it was well worth it. I had a blast and managed to go 500 with Goblins despite some abysmal luck.

Here are the trophies..

And here are the winners of the Spike Magazine Blood Bowl Championship 2008:

The SPIKE! 2008 Champion - Ken Washington, aka gken1
Image

Outstanding Coaching - Jesse Curbello, aka Sallacious
Image

Outstanding Painting - Dave Sutton, aka Da Skum
Image

Outstanding Sportsmanship - Tony Hogan, aka Redman
Image

Endzone Hog - Kavinay Kishor, aka Warpstone
Image

Rambo Award - Ryan Allan, aka overthefalls

Glass Joe Award - Trevor Jeg

Special thanks for all our sponsors: Craving For a Game, Imperial Hobbies, Strategies and the Comic Shop for all their advertising and product giveaways. We managed to conjure up over $400 in door prizes for the event.

Special thanks to Sallacious for designing the phenomenal terrain that we purchased for the club for the Spike and our game days - 20 laminate 40mm boards and designing our 40mm range ruler. The presentation was breath taking.

Special thanks also go out to Lord Chaos for organizing the limited edition "Rudolph" figure and Thunderbowl Comics Issue #1 as the registration giveaway.

Extra special thanks go out to Mike McAree, aka civilian_number_two, for agreeing to sit out of this year's Spike and run the event itself, enter data, answer questions, and make sure the weekend went off without a hitch. The Power Point visual display for the match ups and winners was top notch. Great job Mike!

Thanks to all the participants who came as far as Edmonton, Alberta, Vancouver Island, and various parts of Washington State to drive up and take part in the Spike. I enjoyed meeting all of you and I'm looking forward to seeing you next year for Spike 2009.

Well this was my first tourny and it was a great time. I would like to thank everyone involved, organizers and players, everyone was a class act. I was especially shocked when I got an honorable mention for paint
Image

And Trevor was so excited about his trophy that his Dad was ready to send him back to our car at the boarder

Thanks for a great tourney. It was definitely fun. I'll be looking for more tournies up north to attend.

Everyone I played was great and I had an awesome time. Definitely a solid league there in Vancouver and it looks like Blood Bowl is pretty healthy there.

Salacious was a damn tough opponent - Orcs with a chainsaw are just mean :)

It was loads of fun.

It was great to see lil Trevor win a trophy... even if it was for most casualties against. That kid is a great sport!!!

gken1...
Those mummies freaked me out... and those damn skellies armour... I just couldn't break them down. Gratz on winning the Spike! Next year I will come with my own painted minis.

It was my first ever tournament and quite possibly even my first time playing competitively on the tabletop for over a decade and I had a blast! The venue and atmosphere were great and I really enjoyed playing and talking with fellow coaches.

The Thunderbowl Club, specifically GeneralJason and Mike, ran a very impressive event. The only problem now is that they've made it hard to outdo themselves for Spike 2009.

I couldn't have asked for a better reintroduction to tabletop gaming and am now really looking forward to joining the league.

BTW, Punkpogoer's Necro were excellently painted (with matching dice too) and Trevor's enthusiastic pursuit of Most CAS against was one of the tourny highlight's for me. :)

P.S. The trophies are fantastic! It's probably the most nifty looking award I've ever won.

I'd like to also thank myself for supplying TB Comics and Rudolf figs for everyone in the event. It was loads of fun, even though my Khemri team ended up losing the most casualty award by 2 even though I faced Undead, Orcs, Dwarves, 2 other Khemri teams and a Skaven and a Fling team to finish it off. It was a tough road for my Game Plan who ended up with 30 casualies for and 4 against. :(
Anyway, can't wait for next year and all the other upcoming tourneys we will host.

Well, I have nothing to add to this except that I had a great time and would gladly run it again. Full results are available on the spike site,

http://www.spike2008.com

Galleries will be there a little later (maybe this weekend); for now I have some work and sleep and the usual drudgery to catch up on.

As has been mentioned before who'd a thunk that over 1100 klicks would lead to SUCH a blast of a time! (Besides the marriage one, and that's only once a lifetime...I think. )

Red vs. Blue came out with his best results ever, despite it being what he called some of his toughest games ever. Pi-Rats of Pestilence actually came away with TWO awards...but due to GW's "rather silly" policy we took what I felt was the best and allowed my fellow Skaven take the other piece 'o' swag. (Seeing as it's first swag ever and the grin on his face, more than worth it! Let's hear it for hoggin' 22 plus TD's!)

It's official we're going to be bringing in more victims...ah...coaches for next year! Even the Wife and her "Buns of Steel" went looking for her "Pink Dice 'o' Doom" in order to repeat her "thrashing of Jesse" like at last year's Spike! (Swear she's the only person I know who can flip his karma over...) Along with two others who couldn't make this year due to "wrong province" and "evil work hours". Oh yeah more of that swag is coming back to alberta with us! Seeing as one loves to play Ogres we need to have an "Thonging reunion"

Now if only we could get a drinking license during the rounds...as i swear some of those matches were enough to drive one to fine the Golden nector.

Fantastic hosts, wonderful competition, and we already are craving and planning for next year...who needs those wimps from Toronto and Montreal, the big tournie is out West to stay! :D

Unfortunately I was one of the Albertans who couldn't make it. If you guys are going to hold it the same time next year (August long weekend), I'll be able to plan for it next time.
Sounds like everyone had a great time. Congrads to Generaljason and the boys for orgainsing what sounds like a great event.
Congrads to Ken for winning it all.

Hopefully I'll be there next year.

Yeah, so long as GW Canada gives us the nod, Spike 2009 will be held on the B.C. Day long weekend again, this time being August 1&2. Hopefully we get to play each other this time Colin.

Yeah, with under 2 months to plan it was one of the things I didn't have time to negotiate. We could have had a bartender, but I'd rather have one of our own running it (along with a snack bar) to cut costs. But yeah, we will have a bar next year. Just one of the things we'll improve for the next Spike. I like seeing the golden glasses at Blood Bowl tables. Doesn't seem right without 'em. Hell, the boards weren't laminated for nothing.

We'll be pushing for 60 coaches for Spike 2009, and with 12 months to plan this time it shouldn't be unrealistic, so don't count those Montreal and Toronto coaches out yet Dave.

I'm glad you had a great time and looking forward to the Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer and Lethbridge crews being out next year.

We should have a stand alone picture of the Spike trophy somewhere, so when I find it I'll send it to you.
