Inducements in playoffs?

Post by sdague »

We're trying to figure out the right structure for our open league in having a playoff at the end of the year. One of the open questions for me is how inducements work or don't work in such an environment where team values vary quite a bit.

The rule book seems pretty vague in this area. Given how well the inducements seem to be tightening up games, it seems odd to allow full inducements during the playoffs. I'd be curious to understand how other folks have managed that.

a lot of tournaments allow limited inducements (no wiz, cards, stars, mercs)
some leagues do not allow inducements while others do
it is at the discretion of your commissioner as his word is law

Our league has provided bonus inducements in the playoffs, actually. One must keep in mind that star players are banned entirely in regulation and playoff games, and that lineup changes are forbidden in the playoffs as well. In the first season, everyone was given a Wandering Apothecary or Igor each game as appropriate to help offset the attrition effect. In our latest season, where the playoff run was shorter, the semi-finalists got 50k in special play cards and the finalists 100k. They've been a blast so far and I'm definitely looking forward to my free 100k card later this week (wish me luck).

I suggest that inducements not be banned, but even encouraged and inflated on both sides. Banning certain types of inducements, however, is well within the spirit of things and it's common for leagues to veto the use of star players in the post-season, for example.

We allow inducements in all finals games. We figure it's only fair that the underdog used these tools to make the final, he should not be penalised once he gets there !

Our league allows inducements in the playoffs other than Stars and Mercs Per page 30 in LRB5
At the end of the season the League Commissioner will need to
decide which teams will compete in any end-of-season
tournament, how ties are to be broken, how the tournament will
be run, and what prize the winner of the tournament will receive.
Typically there are two semi-final matches followed by a final.
Inducement and treasury gold may not be used to induce
Star Players or Mercenaries for these matches
as the NAF,
while not monitoring day to day games on the road to the finals,
enforces using your own team for these important matches!
