Dremel tools: looking for a model converter handbook.

Post by Duke Jan »

OK, I have heard about people using Dremel tools with different grinding discs and cutting tools. I was wondering what the experience on the board is on which discs are best to cut metal minis. In my experience different metals require different tools. What do you use for cutting away stuff like drums and the full adventurers camping kit? Any polishing tools useful for getting rid of moldlines and old paint jobs that resist the acetone+toothbrush treatment? How accurate can you cut with a grinding disc, is there a difference between different discs?

I know to wear goggles and mouth caps when grinding. So lets put this general health&safety warning in the first post ;).

I use a rotary tool all the time but not for cleaning mold lines instead I like to use a modeling knife and file to be more precise. I use the rotary tool for cutting and drilling mostly. The reinforced fiberglass cutoff wheels work best for cutting metals Ive used them to cut steel and Ive used them to cut pewter models. I tried using thinner cut off wheels and they are no good for cutting pewter miniatures, they break really easily and last time I tried it I was pretty happy I was wearing safety glasses when the disc shattered and hit me in the face. use the reinforced fiber glass discs they are best. also if you start to feel stuff flying and hitting you in the face change the angle you are holding the tool.
