how to make shoulder pads?

picked up this troll http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/t ... test/77004 because at $2.29 you can't go wrong. How do you make shoulder pads? I had tried using generic space marine shoulders, but they are about 1/2 the size I would need

EDIT: anything else I could add to make him look more blood bowl-y?

Couldn't sculpt a worm if I had to to save my life, but you could add some strappings and a number plate on his back (might have to remove the two bone spurs he got though).

Maybe a kneepad, or fill the muscle lines on his legs for short football pants?

Yes add a kneepad and a pair of very tight lycra shorts ending half way between waist and knee...

Cut the SM shoulderpad in half, and refill the gap with GS.

The model you are buying is beautiful , but 'bendable', are you aware of that? If so, how do you undercaot and paint them? Because I have 2 of the same range over here and are a bit reluctant to paint them. I think the paint will/might flake off of it.

Great find! For shoulder pads what about just using green stuff? Roll a ball shape, stick it on ther shoulder and with a sharp knife cut away the bit you dont need when it cures.

I did it for some warhammer trolls - its was fairly simple and quick.

Hi Jan, yeah be careful with what primer you use, as it will flake if its not right. I use plastic primer on 1/72 scale figs and it bends with the plastic with no flaking, even on very thin bendy weapons.

I use Halford brand which is designed for car bumpers. Rustoleum and Plasti-Kote have ranges which ive not used but im sure will do the job.

Id rather spray but Ive heard that some others brush on a very thin watered down pva glue/paint wash mix which does the same job.

Jan's not exaggerating - I've seen those bones minis folded in half, and they just sprint right back again. Great for avoiding breakages, not so good if you spent forty hours painting it and that same property leads to flaking (i'm not saying it does, I'm yet to see a painted one).

My bones minis arrive next month, so I guess I'll just have to try them out!

I use bitz stores to collect usable shoulder pads for BB conversions. The chaos knights have a nice selection of larger ones that can fit big guys, you can always cut or sand off the spikes if they look too chaotic. Space Orks have a good selection too and if the shoulders are really huge you can use the pads from killer kans or the Ork Dreadnought.

The plastic ogre ironguts have some nice helmets that you can chop up to use as helmets. To BB them up a bit a paperclip can be used as the face guard or a roll of putty. I also like to add loin cloths to the more primitive players if they don’t already have them, I get those from space orks, dire avengers or dark eldar warriors.

I'll try and describe as best I can the method I used on a Chaos spawn:

First I selected what I wanted to be the "pad". In this instance I used two Chaos Marauder shields as shoulder pads, and a skull face shoulder pad as a knee pad.

But I didn't want them to just be floating or attached to the body by nothing whatsoever. I took a peice of string and rolled it in some white pva glue. I then hooped it around the back of the joint in question. This part can be messy. I then snipped away any excess from the ends of the string, so that it comes full circle around the joint. The whole thing will dry and adhere to the model, I then superglued the "pad" over the top of the loose ends so they're hidden.

When dry, the string will be hard so you can actually paint it with a wash of sepia and bingo, it looks like a thick rope the likes of which I wouldn't have a prayer of making with green stuff.
