New dwarf team

Post by Daddallo »

Me and my friends will start bloodbowl (when we recieve the miniatures from mail order) and I will start with the dwarves. My friends will start with undead (6FF, 4 re-rolls, 2 mummies, 4 ghouls, one wight, the rest skeletons and zombies), lizardmen (don't know list yet) and goblins (9FF, 3 re-rolls, ogre, troll and 12 goblins).
This is the roster I plan on taking. I know the FF is a bit low, but I want to take the ogre for those mummies, big guys and saurus.
1 Ogre
6 Longbeards
2 Runners
1 Blitzer
1 Slayer
2 Re-rolls
5 Fan Factor
The idea is to use one runner to defend (if they break through my line, he is the fastes to get there) and the other to attack, the blitzer and slayer will defend him and the longbeards and ogre will stop the things that get to close.
Thanks for any comments (comments for their lists are welcome to).

I don't think you really need the Ogre. Troll Slayers come with Dauntless - which gives them a very good chance of hurting any Big Guys or mummies.

Your Longbeards are going to be vital - Ghouls, Skinks and Goblins are all very vulnerable to the Block/Tackle combo - so you shouldn't have too many problems with the numbers.

I'd suggest replacing the Ogre with another Troll Slayer and using the rest of the money to boost your FF.

Buy an apoth 1st, then the 2nd Blitzer, then the Ogre. Maybe buy another TRR before the Ogre too.

well i don't know that much about dwarves, someone else could most likely give better advice.

But starting undead the way your friend is is kinda dangerous. The major advantage of the team is regenerate, and he's starting with 4 av7 guys who don't do it. I'd start with 2mummies, 1ghoul, 2 wights,(45) 6zombies(63), 9ff, 4rr. Something like that. That's a competitive team right from the get-go, that doesn't rely nearly as much on the ghouls. Especially with a mean nasty dwarf team full of tackle as one of his prime opponents, the ghouls are a bad choice. :)

...maybe on second thought you SHOULDN'T tell him any of this...let him find out the hard way. :)

How good of a friend is he? :P

Well, actually, he is family :)

I like the troll slayer idea, I will try it out. Thanks.

Maximize the possibilities of getting the ball and score. Go for 2 runners and 2 blitzers. Drop the Ogre at first, if you want to have some pretty decent 3 RR.

Well, dropping the Ogre might seem like a good idea, but I started my team - The Dwarf Tossers, like this:

1 Ogre
2 Troll Slayers
2 Runners
2 Blitzers
4 Longbeards

I can't remember how many rerolls I started with, and my FF was 3 or something.
But they're doing well - 5 wins, 2 losses...

The Blitzers and the Runners maximize your ball-handling capability - the Troll Slayers are brilliant for opposing Big Guys - and finally, the Ogre is just so intimidating when towering over the rest of the team on the pitch.

I recommend dropping the Ogre. Too many times have they caused a turnover, and when playing Dwarves, there is little room for mistake. I would:

1) Drop the Ogre
2) Buy a Longbeard
3) Buy a Reroll
4) Buy a Fan Factor

I try to start with the maximum number of Longbeards off of the bat, because:

1) Longbeards develop extremely slow. They need a ton of games under their belt to get SPP's. MVP's are a Longbeard's best friend.
2) They are the cheapest player, allowing for a higher Fan Factor and more rerolls.
3) They have a ton of skills, and are very hard to take off of the pitch. With Block, Tackle, thick Skull, and AV9, they are a stumpy pain in the arse for almost any team. Tough to knock down, and touch to break, you know that the little buggers won't leave you stranded in the 2nd half with a 5 man squad.
4) They are, arguably, the best "Lineman" position in Bloodbowl. They do their job the best: soaking up blocks, covering tackle zones, and generally slowing down your opponents offense.

Although I don't recommend it, I start my Dwarf teams with 10 Longbeards and 1 Runner, and do fine. With that setup I can afford a decent Fan Factor, and Apothecary, and a few rerolls during team creation.

I'm inclined to agree with Bloodbasher about the Longbeards being the best "Lineman" position in BB.

However, the only reason I like the ogre is:
1) intimidation value (often an opponent will pick on him for this very reason - and leave your other more valuable players alone - sorta like a lightning rod for your opponent's aggressive streak)

2) having a player in the team with any sort of random trait just makes for a more interesting game. You never know what the dumb brute is going to actually do...

3) you gotta have at least one player on the team who can open a door without having to stand on his tiptoes! :smoking:

Bloodbasher, if you don't mind me asking, how is your ogre causing turnovers? (just curious)

Because the inevitable double skull, or double block/skull result WILL show up, when he is not Bonehead. Once they get Block, they are not so bad, but personally I would rather have a Slayer. They are a lot more reliable IMO.
