tactics vs WoodElves

Okay this is the thing:
In an upcoming semifinal cup match i am going to face a WE team.
It's got 4 catchers
and 2 extremely good Wardancers (1: AG5, Stripball, 2: tackle, pro)

I play Chaos Pact...and i usually play a Cage tactic with a running GutterRunner...

But i think cages won't work that well here...

Any pointers?

And i've got some money as well...
Do i want a starplayer? a wizard? (for which spell?)

A thing to keep in mind.. if the dice rolls are average, the wood elves will score, there is no stopping them. So concentrate on scoring on your drives, and consider the defensive drives a 'freebie' to kill/maim/KO select players.

At least in the first few turns, if he has the ball, fine, you put some players in tacklezones, so he has to make those 2+ dodges, but assume he will make them. Then you use the rest of your players to block and foul the AG5 dancer. (If you get him off the pitch, start on the rest in order of what you think is important).

On offense, make sure he doesn't get any easy blocks on the carrier (duh :roll: ). Don't rush, but don't try and stall either, Leap on a 2+ _will_ get him into any cage (which should be rather 'loose cages'). If you happen to have a blodge/sure hands guy, he is the designated ball carrier for as long as there is a strip ball elf left. His catchers are nice, but with blodge/sidestep they are not great targets, if you happen to be standing next to one, great, block him, but I think it's better to try and reduce the number of players (atleast in the first half), thus reducing his defense, by going after anything which doesn't blodge.

A wizard could be nice for his lightning bolt, either to get somebody down for a foul, or to blast the ball carrier. The other spells... I'd say either largely ineffective (fireball) or too random (Zap!). If you can spare the cash, I'd hire him.

A wood-elf team with a wardancer with Leap made me re-think my cage;
this was for an Orc team --- I just started a Chaos Pact team & am thinking of using a similar tactic when I face the welfs again.

Instead of a cage, I used 2 lines, one square apart, with an Orc thrower(I also have one in my Chaos Pact team) at the rear middle -- not sure if this diagram will come out OK: B is the ball carrier.

Unlike the cage I usually use, he cant just put TZ's on the guys on one side
of the cage & then Leap the wardancer into the cage to sack the ball carrier ------ if he does try to put TZ's on the guys near the ball carrier,
he has to use more guys to do it & if it doesnt work, his centre will be
vulnerable --- ideally, the 2 guys next to the Ball carrier should have Guard.

PS:

The guy at the back should be directly behind(one square away from) the ball carrier.

I think what you mean is what I described as a 'loose cage', i.e. not in direct contact with the ballcarrier. Something like this (note: I just 'sorta' filled this in, but the basic idea is there)

This way, to cancel assists, you need more players, and even if you blitz someone on the edge of the cage, you need to move some more to stand next to the carrier. And if there is some guard around, you'd be hardpressed to get a 1 die block with your leaping dancer.

It's also harder to pin down the entire cage with a few guys in front of it, as you have a bit more mobility.

Guys, if you use MixX's Play Creator ( viewtopic.php?t=7453&highlight= ) then the formation you use is easy for everyone to see.

Excepting the fact that on Moz/Linux, I can't get to the Play Creator, yes, I'd advise the rest to use it ;)

i don't have any guard players so that is bad...
nore do i have blodge-surehands players.

What do you think of that chainsaw-gobbo as a hired gun?
Would a chainsaw do any good against woodelves? I mean, i guess, i'll have to blitz with him if i want to use it..

Hmm tough one.

The most difficult thing will certainly be to keep the ball on your offence.
I'd try to do use the CW as a ball carrier, so if he leaps into your cage he will always face a 2db against. Still a good chance for him to knock the ball loose, but i think it's the best you can try (if the CW only had block ...).

Try the heck to get the wardancers off the pitch, esp. the strip ball one. It might be useful to send your two tacklers after him, those might be able to chain him up. The wardancer with tackle does not matter that much, as your CW does not have dodge anyway.

I was thinking about using him as carrier indeed. Another option would be to use the SureHands-block-lineman as carrier...which would be better?
then i will loose the bal in 1/3
otherwise it is...1/3 as well, right?

hmm...
offensive it would be better to use the Movement6 player...but the chances of the wardancer going down are better with the CW...

I use to play with wood elves and is too easy disband a cage, so don't try this maneuver; the only way to beat'em is really beating its main players, fouling the WD and blocking its catchers (tackle or diving tackle are great skills). Untill you manage to do this, you can't be safe of its terrible skill (ie. Leap).

Not really.. on a pow/skull the WD would be in the unenviable position of being stuck in a chaos box... which is worse than being down :)

But seriously, looking at the Elves (Hi Dave!), the only player you need to fear on defense is that AG5 Wardancer, then at a far second, the other wardancer, and that's it. Keep those down, out or (well!) surrounded and you are set for a nice 2 or 3 turn TD. Or if you get lucky and KO+ the stripper, feel free to.. errr... retire a few more lineman while going forward with care. Don't underestimate the other nasties, but they shouldn't be a huge threat if you keep your head and move with caution.

yeah well, all of his main players have blodge or at least dodge...and i only have 2 tacklers...


And what do think about that chainsaw idea?

you have any guys with tackle and mighty blow? if so, blitz wardancers with him every time you get the chance, and if that doesn't do the trick, foul them too.

can't say much else without really digging into your roster and theirs.
