An idea, more from twisted imagination than any bent towards balance....

After the OT half is over, everyone including the fans and the ref are sick of watching such a dull game. They begin to take things into their own hands.

Every turn, one random player (including all players on the pitch, both teams) is the target of a thrown object. Make an injury roll for that player. The player currently holding the ball is immune, pick a different player. If the ball carrier ever loses the ball, he is thrown off the pitch by the referee, literally. Make an injury roll for him exactly as if he were pushed into the crowd. The game continues until all players are gone, or until someone scores. If at any point there are no players on the field, each player rolls 1D6 for every fan factor. For each six rolled, one of the opponents fan factor is killed in the ensuing riot. Whichever player rolls more sixes wins the game. In case of a tie, keep fighting......

If everyone dies, who cares who wins.

At some point, there will only be one team (fan?) left. One to nothing, we win!

Well there's nothing wrong with a draw in a league (but being a British football fan I'm used to draws, especially as I follow Aston Villa  )

In a cup we have tried many things.

Sudden death OT works badly as it favours the receiving team...

8 more turns favours hard teams...

and anyway - we usually run out of real time!

Currently we play "keep playing until someone wins" - i.e. no more kick offs - sudden death, or penalties...

We use the kicking rules in our league - but NOT for penalties (as the elves just win!)

Instead you simply "score" a penalty on a 3+. kick gives you a reroll and pro works as usual. No team rerolls allowed.

line up five men each and then take penalties - if tied go to sudden death...

Much like actual footie penalties...

Edit:
Skummy, i didn't notice they put that in the LRB. Now if they could only remove the other option and make this the only way to go!
I think the reason it still exists is that sometimes you need a resolution. On the other hand, I think ties are fine and you should find your tie breakers elsewhere.

We also use draws (except in the playoffs where it will be as many OT periods as necessary until the score isn't tied at the end of a period).

I did not vote either.

Our league use both the OT blitz, and the (hated) diceoff at the end of that. Ok it's down to luck, but it can be influenced by saving re-rolls.
We've only ever had one game come down to this, in fact the final of the chaos cup. My opponent rolled a 3, I rolled a 5. Maybe that's why I like it :D
Or it could be that incredible tension hanging on a single dice.

Oh and I don't have a sister...

Do you agree that adding the blitz makes it much more likely to end in a result? That could be why it has only happened once in your league. I know we have been using it for 3 seasons now and have had quite a few overtimes but never needed another OT after the first. I think the blitz helps in this matter as it becomes much harder for either side to set up a good play to begin with. A little chaos at the kickoff can cause for some easy openings in the defense.

Yes it certainly does. Also it tends to result in a more exciting finish to the game.

Totaly agree and can't encourage others to use it enough. It really creates some awesome finishes to close games.
