my avatar (a scan of one of my figures) seems really small. When I check out other members avatars some are over the required 6kb or 80x80 pixels.

How do I get a bigger one?

You need to host it at some other site.

For example, if you look at the filename of my avatar (right-click it, and select properties) you see that it is hosted on http://www.ee.oulu.fi
So, get some webspace that allows hotlinking (geocities IIRC does not allow you to link directly to images), put the picture in there and then enter the url to your profile.
