Blood(less)Bowl
First off, I know this will probably go over like a lead ballon..
One aspect of BloodBowl that I have never really liked is that players are killed...very often it seems. In real life, the public outcry at death and serious injuries in the NFL lead to better equipment, rule changes and other measures to reduce the rate of injuries.
So, maybe in the bloodbowl world, this same outcry begins to take effect as fans want to continue to follow their favorite players longer.
As a result of this, the game has become a little bit safer in recent years. thought the possibility of death is still around.
To represent this only takes a slight modification:
The Casualty table (pg 12) is change to the following:
1-3 Badly hurt (unchanged)
4-5 Miss next game (no roll on SI table
6 Serious injury
Change the Serious injury table
all miss next game effects are now niggling injuries
a roll of 66 is changed to Dead
Also, security is increased in the stands and as a result players getting pummelled in the stands (from being pushed out of bounds) always suffer a KO result.
Of course, this will reduce deaths and injuries. I don't know how to get to this to work with the TR CAP that is the goal of the BBRC.....

murder mayhem and death
i'm sorry but that is just crazy! Blood is part of the game, this is fantasy not the real world. I can see taking out the blood IF you want to teach small children, but it would be about as much fun as one of those old vibrating football games.

Right! The only way to enjoy the game is Sineater's way!sineater40k wrote:i'm sorry but that is just crazy! Blood is part of the game, this is fantasy not the real world. If you and your friends like building up full teams of super stars, go right ahead. You'll undoubtedly find that TR quickly spirals up into silly levels. With every coach having über-teams with 176 SPP/player, I think the game play would get pretty dull. Also, forget about adding in rookie teams at any point. That would suck. Keeping teams manageable without forced, draconian measures will be tough, if even possible.
You still might have fun with it for a while but I think that without the tangible risk of losing your players each and every time you dodge away, you just won't care about your teams and plays as much.
As far as the mechanics for making things 'softer,' it sounds like you've got a reasonably sound system. Simple changes without excessive extra rules should make it easy enough to pick up.
I don't like losing good players any more than the next guy and I'm definitely not someone who goes out trying to wreck teams for fun. However the tension before trying that last GFI and knowing that it could very possibly kill your prize Gutter Runner (or whatever) is a whole lot of what makes the big plays and players so much fun. I think you'll find that you miss it, most likely. Each to his own, however.

Also, in a league setting this will dramatically favor lower armor teams, most notably the various elves, Norse and Zons, as their players are the ones that die/get permanents the most often.
So you will need a mechanism that helps the higher AV teams like Dwarves, Orcs, etc, and it will have to be a pretty serious equalizer.
Perhaps halve the winnings? Or add +10k for av7 and +5k for av8 to player costs? That way the few injuries incurred will be far harder to replace.

Oh yeah - it would suck to be the dwarves in that league...
Here's a really silly suggestion to try to make any team playable in that environment. After playing with padded knuckledusters on SafetyTurf®™ fields, players tend to go soft.
Ditch the "Stunned" result and replace it with KO. Now you still suffer in-game from having low TR and it's a little harder to stay on the pitch and rack up those TDs with your indestructable low AV players. Suddenly those dwarves and Orcs become playable again when it's so bloody easy to wipe the field clean and make a few TDs of their own.
I said it was silly...

I don't think there is anything wrong with this aspect of the game. I think there should be changes to the game but before you change something that works well try to change something that there is a flaw in. My opinion, Aging table.
BTW, if the fans want to see players do so well why would they beat them up when they are pushed off the field?

maybe slow down spp gains or progression(I was thinking double all skill level ups)...though no matter how much you did this, teams would still grow big eventually.
I must admit, I hate losing players to death...no one other thing in Bloodbowl pisses me off more than this. I know (from playing in the OLBBL for so long, and now in FUMBBL) how the game becomes after about 250TR or so, yet I still dislike the deaths (especially the crowd push deaths).
So, I'm trying to think of ways to reduce the deaths in a game without affecting the overall balance.
I like the all stuns=ko's idea
With the method I proposed, you still get players off of the pitch at the same rate as now...but since injuries are less, those players will be back to gain more spp's
Maybe the 6 result should add in Miss Next Two games (along with the other injuries involved).
Many coaches treat a niggle as a death anyway--retiring the player as soon as possible.
Along with aging (though I know there is talk of getting rid of aging), I think player turnover will be less, but not much less, than it is now. I could be wrong.

In the real world better equipment leads to more safety, in the BB world better armour would be matched by better weapons and bigger spikes and knuckledusters, etc.

The short answer is "no", but it is a qualified "no" because there are odd ways of interpreting the question which could justify the answer "yes".
