hehehe know exactly what you mean McDeth.I'm still living in naivety where my first assumption is, bah, he's sent me the wrong file, that must be some other game he's playing in
I try to make up for the loss of immediacy/interaction by chatting a lot in mails and making liberal use of the text box during my turns. What really frustrates me is opponents who say nothing, I hate that

I don't think this is limited to just Pbem. I find that I am way more attached to my fumbbl players then I am to my tabletop guys. My table top players fight and die in hilarious fashions. The situation and the company is just lighter.
In Javabowl every death is vindictive. For some reason that faceless, silent entity playing the other side has much more hatred for my team then the guy I am staring at across the table that has TOLD me he is out to kill my best player.
Don't ask me why.

i've thought many times that there should be an option to either load the file as normal or to load it at the point of your last swap and then have the client display the actions with a second or two delay, sort of an animation, of the previous turn so you can sort of "feel" where things are going...GalakStarscraper wrote:I'll see how difficult it would be to have an auto turn rewind trigger at the end of the game load sequence.

I have less trouble with bad things happening in PBem than with tabletop. I think this is because there is no one to see my immediate reaction when bad stuff happens. And there is no one gloating. Well, my opponent may gloat all he wants, as long as I don't know about it: fine. Silent coaches who only start writing e-mails to rub in that they killed someone really suck the fun out of the game for me.
I also try to get to know as much as I can about my opponents. The social part of PbeM is something I really enjoy. Especially when my opponent is a native speaker of English. My e-mails tend to be longer and with less spelling or grammar errors when they are. E-mails with the file, the whole file, and nothing but the file make for an entirely different game, which, consequently, is much less fun.

Oh, I hate those kinds of e-mails. I want to know all about my opponents. The country and place they live in, their work, children, you name it. That way it's easier to start chatting away, and before you know it, you're seriously considering continuing the e-mail traffic after the match has finished.

I always start my opening e-mails with asking what my opponent does for a living. Since this usually is something I know absolutely nothing about, I ask more about it in following e-mails. Showing interest in the other person really works like magic.
And besides, when playing native speakers of Engish, I can always ask them for help with what I: translating English to Dutch and vice versa.
