Second Edition Ogres Only

Post by misterwister2000 »

I have a couple questions about 2nd ed. Blood Bowl Ogres.

1) Is the size of these 2nd ed. models comparable to Morg 'N' Thorg? Are they large models like the Kroxigors, Ogres, Rat Ogres, and Trolls?

2) How many varieties are there? I have seen some that are bald-headed, and some that have mohawks.

3) If you have any images of painted (or non-painted) 2nd ed. Ogres, could you please post them?

Thanks For Your Help!

Well you can forget using them as ogres in todays stanards, they are a whole lot smaller. In fact i picked up a few of them and am using them as normal chaos warriors. They fit nicely on a 25mm base. I will try and get a few snap shots of them for you.

Actually, most coaches in my leagues prefer the 2nd edition big guys purely from a game play standpoint. Unlike the current Ogres, they actually fit nicely on the board (both standing and prone)

I still like them. They have a gritty feel to them.

I'm pretty sure there were three in total, plus the first ed Ogre.

The new Ogres are fantastic...but you can't put three in adjacent squares.

There are 4 different 2nd ed. Ogres and 1 from 1st ed.

80's Big guys had the roughly the size as the 3rd ed. BB Black Orc Blocker, maybe 15% more mass, but the same height. Compared with 3rd/4th ed minis they look as having ST4.

Blood Bowl Ogres

Post by misterwister2000 »

Yeah, I want to buy one Ogre, but I'm split between getting one of the older, smaller 2nd ed. models or the brand new ones from the Ogre Team GW just produced. I think the new ones look WICKED, especially the one down in a three-point stance. But the old ones look really awesome, too--they're just small. Here are the pros and cons:

New Ogres

Pros: Large, impressive models. New style. On scale with my other big guy models like Grashnak, Headsplitter, Ripper Bolgrot, etc.

Cons: Expensive! $15.00 without shipping. Take up a lot of space on the pitch.

Old Ogres

Pros: Impressive, great-looking models. Fit onto pitch (even when prone). Affordable compared to other big models. Eye-catching OoP model that most people don't have. Fun to paint (mohawks, muscular, armor pads, etc.)

Cons: Not to scale with comparable players. They don't look like they have STR 5. These guys appear to be too small to perform like other big players. For example: put a 2nd ed. Ogre against the brand new Minotaur.

What is your opinion? I don't need two, just one. Which would you buy? I'm leaning towards the older Ogres because they're rare and not easy to get, but I wish I could hold them in my hands and get a close look.

Thanks!

There's the ogre in the bottom right in this pic:

Then there's the ogre in the bottom right of THIS pic:

And THEN there are the ogres in the top of this pic:

Since the top two are from the first Citadel catalogue ('88) I suppose both of them count as first edition? Though the chunky guy in the first pic is "the" first edition BB ogre... :) I'm not much of a mini historian.

Edit: Oh crap, didn't see that link to the bb.net-gallery until now. And yay! I have a very rare mini it seems... Didn't think Ogre3 was anything to write home about. Cool!

Scale only counts for dioramas. Use the 2nd ed Ogres. The look better and actually fit on the pitch.

That and I have a bunch I can sell you.

I prefer mine without the shoulder pads and that can take the price down to $13 if you bit order them. Still pricey but if your buying a team you could end up saving $24. But since you are just looking at getting one i would go with a 2ed one. Unless it was a human team then I might go for a new one.
