For the Norse, I painted the catchers numbers on the round plates they have on their backs. For my Norse throwers I painted their numbers on the sides of their right legs.
I have seen people that have painted the numbers of their players on the 4 cardinal directions of their miniatures bases and that usually comes out pretty cool looking.

i allways try to piant number on 'front' edge of round base (i know it has no edge) If number at front always bit more easy to tell if figure stunned/prone.
Nice number on a pad is always good but to be honest the smaller detials are too hard to read in game. Blitzer 6 has guard but i cant see his glove etc. If im painting numbers to look impressive use roman numerals as they look great but hard to read quick. Then forces back to first point just look at the base.
remeber figs are just too game on with

I personally don't like numbers on the bases. I decided to paint my numbers on my Gobbo team, rather than use decals. And I found it's much easier to use inks or washes. It's just a shame most of my numbers need to be done in white... There isn't a white ink is there? If there is I am so getting it.

painted numbers every time, but location is unimportant, helmets, shoulderpads, clothing, even tattoos....
I used to use roman numerals until I realised VIII is harder to paint than 8
