team selection

Post by Phipstar »

me and some of my friends are up to start a league, all of us are total BB-newbies. In our league we allready got the following teams:
dwarves
woodelves
undead
darkelves
skaven

I have to decide now which team i want to play with, i have the following options:
human
orc
chaos dwarves

the other two teams will also be played by other guys, but first come, first served ;)
what would be your suggestion? and why?
thx for your help!

ORCS!!!!
the best team for sure,
there slow, but the most rounded,
high armor on all
4 ST 4 bashers, 4 sweet blitzers,
You get throwers with sure hands and pass for half a passing game,
you can have goblins for ball running, fouling, or any suicide jobs (they're cheap to replace)
And your Freebooter choices are sweet

At this choice I also would go for ORC.
They are very solid and easy to play. :)

I have very limited experience with coaching either of the races you are considering. However I'd like to suggest that you do not choose your race based on what is best (unless you're one of those hopeless I-MUST-WIN kind of players) but look at other things as well. With that said here's my views on the 3 races:

Humans - nice all-round team, lots of flexibility which makes for a diverse and interesting game, one of the only teams with ogre acces which is a big plus (IMO the new ogre-minis are SWEEEET), the Griff Oberwald (human star-players) mini is also very nice.

Orcs - also fairly flexible, while definately being a strength/bashing-team they're not half-bad ballplayers either, lots of entertaining rules especially if you are allowed to recruit stars/secret weapons (Throwing bombs and goblins are barrels of fun IMO).

Chaos Dwarf - a very strong bashing-team, limited ballhandling capabilities, bashing can be very fun but can also make you somewhat unpopular ;) (when you kill the 5th elf player, you can expect very grumpy elf-players), IMO the chaos dwarf minis are ugly beyond compare.

Overall I'd go Orcs or Humans - I actually considered both for a new team I have coming up and ended up with Orcs because I wanted something different from the elegant Dark Elves I usually coach (this of course doesn't really apply to you).

My 2 cents, and have fun with your new league.

I personally think that as a starting line up, orc probably have the best range of skills and strength for alround play, but the chaos dwarves have the opportunity to develop the running game potentially better with your strength 4 players as potential ball carriers, the hobgoblins are as good as the orc linemen, but come cheaper (admittedly for less AV though). The chaos dwarf minis arent ugly at all though! :) just personal preference i guess

thanks a lot for your help, i think i will try it with the orcs, i like the imagination of throwing goblins into the endzone :D
and the secret weapon selection is also very nice 8)

i play a human and human/dwarfs old world team but orcs do kick a lot of ass. 4 black orcs on the los is nice + a troll. lots fs casualty points will flow in once you get block. but if you can get a human team do it they are a normal team and do pretty much what you need.

If this is a short term league, go for the Chaos Dwarves. Anything more than 10 games or so, and Orcs are probably better.

Whenever someone asks what team they should play for their first league, I respond by saying that they should pick whatever feels right for them. If you like to bash people while cursing the pointy-eared girls who dodge and leap, take Orcs. If you like to play a well-rounded and balanced team with enough speed and athletic ability to score, take Humans. If you like big hats (as I most definately do), take Chaos Dwarfs though I would suggest that they are a fairly difficult side for a new player to take.

i mostly think so too, the CD's are a bit weird, hobgoblins too fragile, CD's too slow, and BC's too clumsy to catch or pick up a ball solidly.
orcs were a nice choice, yesterday i won my first match against humans 2-1 :) nice match, even though i only caused one casualty, the game before, woodelves vs darkelves: 2 SI's, 2 deaths on both sides, a lot of k.o.'s and light injuries, incredible fun to watch!

And I think the CD are a good tournament team.
But in my opinion they don't perform well at a league.

also note all the chat about this team good for this reason... this team weak at that.... they are all balanced and all down to personal taste as which best to pick
