I'm not the best person to ask about sculpting (I've still got a lot to learn)
but...
The wight was sculpted on an armature, a very simple affair due to the lack of legs. A single piece of thin wire was stuck into a cork (you can get great, slightly larger than normal corks if you got to a home-brew shop), fleshed out with greenstuff with a cross-piece for the arms. I actually sculpted the head in place, but it is often best to sculpt it separately (on a short piece of wire, or a pin), and add it at a later point in the process. Armour was sculpted using brown stuff rather than green stuff. It really is very difficult to get nice crisp edges when sculpting, but brown stuff makes it a hell of a lot easier!
Umm... That's a vague start. All I can suggest is that you practice a lot(that's what I'm doing!).
Traveller (or any other potential sculptors), feel free to pm me if you want some advice on anything - I can't promise I'll be of any use though!

As for the idea of an auction... It was just a vague thought. I don't think the wight is quite up to scratch to sell commercially, but it's been fun to do and will hopefully be appreciated by those who get it as a free gift this weekend! I've not done this to make money, but there are a few spares and it struck me that I may as well try to do something good with them. If I'm going to sell them for charity, it makes most sense that I try to get as much for them as possible!
Alternatively, if any of the really amazing painters that frequent this site would like to offer to paint one for me, I might be happy to exchange one of my own copies for the service...

cheers for the small "how to do a wight" report !

I asked SteveB before for some advices and, after sculpting some chainmail for my latest project, i just can say :... i have to practise, i have to practise, i have to practise !!! I tried the brown stuff, too, and i agree!

well, about painting a wight... i would be very tempted, but i think, there are better painters than me ... but, those painter are mostly no collectors ! :D ... if time doesnt matter, i would paint one for you.

example of my paintwork: look at my website... my GD orcs may be good enough as examples

Don't be so modest. You're an excellent painter and you have a Silver Demon to prove it.

Thanks boondog. I am proud of the wight, but I've spent too much time looking at miniatures by the likes of Steve Buddle or Andy Foster!

Time probably isn't an issue, so I might take you up on your offer Traveller (no promises yet, I'm not sure how many of the little fellas I'll have to spare!).

Oh, and I meant to say thanks for all the complimentary remarks :D

As for casting. Not something I've really figured out for myself yet - I got some help with that part of the process... The one thing to be aware of is quite how important the casting is. Everything you sculpt should bear in mind what is going to happen if it gets cast (details get flattened, the model will shrink by about 10% in depth). I know the wight caused a few problems (the left arm was awkward), but it eventually turned out fine!
