What does pro-painted mean to you?

Post by Ewan »

Some of the auctions on e-bay class themselves as pro-painted and to be honest, although some of them are neatly painted, very few on offer are what I would class as pro-painted.

I am not meaning to insult anyone who is selling in here intentionally but an example of this type of thing is..
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 06813&rd=1

Fairly neatly painted but hardly $100 worth of "pro-painted" IMHO

If thats the state of things on e-bay, I may just be the first mini painting millionaire this time next year! :D

Pro-painted to me is a paint level that is too difficult (or too time consuming) for me to produce so therefore I am willing to pay for someone else to do it.

It is not:

i)Painted models for money

ii)Basecoated models for money

iii)Basecoated models with some half-assed highlighting or shading

It is models that have obviously had alot of time, care and effort put into them.

I mean, I sell alot of models on E-bay and alot of them are painted. The only times I have sold models as 'pro-painted' is when I have been amazingly impressed or when I knew the person who painted it used to work for the GW 'Eavy Metal department....

Those are not "Pro-painted" level as most would understand it...but then again, he's posted pics and you can see that they are decent but no better. I can do better than most of those...which is saying something.

There's a relevant Larry Leadhead comic...don't have a link tho. maybe someone else does.

What does pro-painted mean to you?

When it comes to eBay, "pro-painted" usually means you should turn and run away.

'pro-painted' on ebay to me means about as much as 'rare'
I usually ignore pro painted rare out of print and all of those other selling points and see whats really there in the pictures.

I think some people are just very fast impressed.
some people from my league think I'm almost a pro
just because they don't know better painting then mine because they don't paint them self.

so I think thats the biggest problem..

To me pro-painted means that all the figs ( All not some ) painted and based to a standard better than i can achieve. Or in other words the high echelons of the painters here.

Too many people now just randomly add pro painted to their ebay numbers in a hope of artificially inflating the price. to be fair i dont blaim them its just business. You need to ignore the pro painted tag and just concentrate on the quality of the models/paintings themselves rather than the Sellers description.

EBay - English Dictionary:

"pro painted" = painted
"painted to a high standard" = 3 colors slapped on (GW tournament standard)
"Rare" = not lieing in front of you (probably ... right now)
"OOP" = i've been in a store lately and could not find it at the first glimpse
"Very Rare" = my neighbour does not own one (actually all he owns is a bottle of vodka)

ugly lead figurine = could be everything from a 2nd ed Human Lineman to Troll#3

strangely one of the words not hijacked for over the top advertisement is "vintage". Whenever I read that in conjunction with a mini auction it was in fact an 80s mini...

Pro painted on ebay is often wrong used.
Most of the minis don't look like as some paints for long.
I think most sellers use this term because they want to catch attention on their items.
Fortunatelly they add pictures so mostly I decided not to bit for this item especially when its actually overpriced.

For me pro painted means that its really cool painted (from Level2.5 up to GD) and therefore the bases should be also extraordinary(e.g. dismembered bodyparts or skulls and mud on the greens).

How much would you expect to pay for a team painted to a 'very high standard'? IMO $100 is a bit steep for some of the examples featured but I suppose if the pictures are there, its up to you how much you bid!

To me pro painted means a team that would absolutely, without question, receive full painting marks at any tournament, under any rules. That is what you are paying for, after all. It doesn't have to be Golden Daemon standard, obviously! :D

Pro painted can be very misleading. Very rarely see an item for sale on ebay worthy of that title. A lot of items with this tag are awful.

Don't wanna sound arrogant but as a Golden Demon winner, I wouldn't sell a painted team on ebay for less than £250.

Come to think of it, I wouldn't sell a painted team full stop.
