What type of paint to use?

Post by Ravage »

I'm about to start painting my first team but had a quick Q on the types of paints available. I know the correct, easy answer when painting miniatures is to use Citadel Paints, but are there other types of paints that one can buy in any craft store that will also work well and/or will work in conjunction with Citadel Paints? First and foremost, I'm not even sure the type of paint (acrylic, et al) Citadel is, so I'm really not sure what the "baseline" paint type is or else I could probably just look for the same type of paint at a craft store.

Thanks much for help

here some links, which could help:

http://www.acrylicosvallejo.com/ look for game colors range !

http://www.ttfxmedia.com/vallejo/cgi-bi ... ortecnicas

http://www.paintingclinic.com/

I´m using nearly only Vallejo colors now.

Ah, btw...just in case if you use Vallejo colors later.. If you open the bottle and put a small metall ball into it ( well, i´m using a airgun "diabolo" bullet  ) its easier and faster to shake and mix the color pigments in the bottle before you start painting

It really depends on your budget. I've been starting to use the Vallejo paints myself, but I'm still using the citadel paints that I already had (that haven't dried up already) I really can't knock the cheaper acrylic paints that you get at craft and dollar stores. I use black and white craft paints almost exclusively, and I keep some other colours that I wouldn't be able to fine otherwise.

And Traveller, thanks for the tip on the Vallejos!

I´ll recommend the Reaper pro paint range. They´ve a really good quality and are fairly cheap in comparison to the GW paints (contain nearly twice the amount of paint).
Also with these I had less problems with the white and black - some cursed colours for me, always drying out for some reason.

I'm a true believer of the Vallejo line as well. My wife got me the full game colour set as a Christmas present last year. Very happy with that.

I have a huge box with a full set of Citadel paints in various states of being dried out or new. Need to Ebay it and see if anyone wants to take it off my hands along with the custom traveling paint case I built for them.

I recently stumbled across Jakob Nielsens' website and he wrote he preferred Citadel metallics to Vallejo .. as they seem to have more pigment ..

anyone has any experience with that ??

wow Jakob Nielsens is a non gw paint man :O
must admit after around 19 years painting i am a full GW painter, but always found other stuff worth a look. Love other brand ink, but basic acrylic is fine. mush talk about Vallejo piant so may give it a try...
