If your opponent can consistantly delegate 8 out of a possible 11 players to a cage than you need some practice on defense...more than multiple block can provide for sure.DwarfFanatic wrote:Some folks run a cage with a full complement of 8 players surrounding the ball carrier but to each his own.
Don't take it the wrong way...not meaning to be a jerk

As GUS said a cage is usually 4 guys with the ball carrier, and only used as a temporary Ball protection play

I disagree, I think multiple block can be used for cage-breaking against the standard cage formed with 4 players around the ballcarrier. You just need Break Tackle on the troll in order to make it work properly (and some good attention as to where the assists are coming from).Gus wrote:multiple block has strictly no cage-breaking use when the cage is, as should be, formed by 4 players at each diag of the ball carrier.

if the cage is formed by 4 players at each corner of a square with the ball carrier in its centre, then the dodge has to be made in 3 TZs, meaning with a ST5 troll it's a 4+ dodge, with ST6 it's a 3+.
then, assuming all the players in the cage are ST3, you have to bring 2 assists and cancel the other corner's assist, or if the corner has Guard, bring 3 assists (that is only possible with at least one player with Guard on your side). that's to get a 2db without a RR, since your troll is a BG. against a carrier with Block, that's 5/9 to knock him over.
that's not what i would call "ideal cage-breaking conditions"

No it's certainly not ideal cage-breaking conditions, but without the leaping and dodging of an elf team it makes for an extra option on defence (particularly an orcish defence or lizzie's for that matter)
The key to it though is Break Tackle to get that ST 6 big guy in to hit the ballcarrier, and having a leader reroll as backup certainly helps. Its not the most reliable way of getting to and taking down a ballcarrier but you put the fear of nuffle in your opponent when your big guys break tackles into 3 tz and knocks over the ballcarrier
Combining it with multiple block means you can break open the cage, and not just hit the ballcarrier. The odds aren't great as Gus's pointed out, but 5/9 in knocking him over is better than 1/3 given by a 1-dice block (by leaping elves who probably have strip ball anyway but hey
) and just that little bit better than 50/50
