Yes, its definitely worth it. Kicking deep makes the pesky fast teams work that little bit harder to get past you (and gives you extra time to slap them about!). Also, it lessens the chance of bad kick resulting in touchback.

Kick is useful on any team, If you're fast you can try and get to it before your opponent does, if you're slow, you can delay the break out of your opponent by forcing him to either make a long pass or not risk passing. Kick is always useful. When to take it depends on how your team has developed so far.

Kick is great
1) with fast teams you can get the ball if you kick middle/near and the opponent fails his pick up
2) with slow teams you can kick near and try to entrench the opponents ball carrier, if you're good you can end up having his ball carrier marked after turn 1
3) it's good to prevent cages from forming
4) it's great if your opponent plays wiht less players on the pitch or is one of those coaches who set up heavily on one side
5) you can kick deep to prevent one-turn scorer (also TTM)
6) you can kick deep if you want to give your opponent a hard time when he just has two turns to score
7) with kick you significantly decrease the chance of a touchback which can be annoying if the opponent gives the ball to his Bull Centaur, Break Tackle Ogre or Rat Ogre etc.
Even if the Kick skill has no effect once the drive has started, it directs the course of the match by altering the starting condition.
Summing up, a good coach should have a kicker in his squad regardless what team he plays.

So nobodys really sure then?
Ok cool. I only have one orc lino you see and he's my dirty player. The way I typically set up on defence means that I cant give it to a blitzer as they are all in the flanks and (I wouldnt want to anyway) my throwers skills are too preciouse which leaves only two Black orcks and my Dirty Player not on the LOS to give kick skill too.
I suppose dirty player and kick skill is quite fluffy though.
