Nah..not yet..
#1's nice..works well
#3's just too freaky...commendable effort tho..
#4 dunno if it's just the pics..but black lining looks a little heavy..but a team of these at playing height would work really well and look damn good..so cool I think..
#5 Nice again..but they've been around a while if it comes from the team I think it does...
#6 and #7....at least take the trouble to fill in the holes in the base or whack a bit of flock on...I mean both, not one or the other... and buy some proper brushes...:P
#9 is really nice, gonna be the deserved winner I think...

Now I might have a read back through and find out who painted what..
*gets his coat*

The people who painted them of course. :P

#9 is okay. It just doesn't work as a whole. What happened to her face? Everything else is great apart from the shine. Her face is awful.

#8 is the only fig that pops on all counts. It just plain looks good.

So many great models! I'm going with #8, but it could have been anyone of 4 of them!

Oh yeah, that's nice.
#6 is my entry and I think it is decent for the rookie painter I am.
I entered this contest to get some advice, not to be made fun of.
I "at least" took the troubles to spend several hours painting the mini, while lots of others have not.
I know it's far from perfect and would appreciate constructive criticism.

Emperor,

The mini looks alright. I don't paint but I think it's fine. The base really detracts from it though. It's hard to judge the mini when that lumpy green thing is saying, "I'm not done yet!".

To that I say: take a look at rule 6 for the contest:
There needs to be at least three different colours used for the finished article. It would also be nice if the models were based but again this isn't needed just desirable.

The base shouldn't be much of a factor.

You're right. I shouldn't be. When looking at your creation though, the base is part of the finished product. Sadly, it's a really large part. It's all part of the presentation. Without care the base just makes your figure look unfinished.

That's all I'm really qualified to comment on. I think your paint is fine but you really want pointers from one of the painters in the group.

And honestly, "finish the base" is constructive criticism.

As another non-painter, I have to agree. Wheter I want to or not, if I see to identically painted figs, 1 based 1 not, I jusst prefer the based one, it looks better. i suppose it's because one on a finished base looks more "alive" while one on an unfinished one still looks like a WIP.

A nicely finsihed base make an average model look good, good model look great etc.

You've spent some time on the figure and for a rookie painter have achieved a pretty good result you owe it to yourself to spend a fair amount of time on the base as well So the model looks its best.

As for DW's comments I wish more people here would be that honest if they were I would probably show off more of my stuff. I appreciated the comments he made about my entry.

I think #5 is the best one...

When is the next contest, maybe I'll try to get in on it...?

I too chose #5. But #8 and #9 was an incredibly close 2nd IMO.

As for the people making fun of other entries... that is not only rude, but incredibly stupid too. It's people like you who make others NOT want to participate in fun competitions like this. Everyone needs some constructive criticism ... not rude comments. So if you have nothing nice or helpful to say...really... shut up.

Here is some friendly advice for various entries...
Note - I am no professional... just want to help if I can

Entry #1
Too difficult to really judge properly. Need a larger pic. But from what I can see, looks like it was inked too much. Either that or gloss finish. The base looks good. I really do think that the picture did not do you entry justice.

Entry #2
I think it needs more gradual highlights, otherwise one great paint job and really nice base as well. Good job!

Entry #3
Cool lil guy... but I think you were being too creative with the skin paint. I think most people like to see a more realistic skin. Also, thinning out the paints will take away the chunky look to your paints. Take your time with the highlights... I know it is tedious. For the base, have you tried static grass? Looks so much better. Good job though.

Entry #4
Another case of where the picture doesn't do the mini justice. The base looks good but its hard to see highlights on the mini. The white looks a bit thick and chunky. The clothes could use some highlights. Good job

Entry #5
The paint job looks great. Highlights look wonderful too. Her face is nice and clean. The metallics look nice too. The base looks excellent. With the cloak and her skin tone, looks like she comes from norway..hehe. Well done indeed!

Entry #6
Definately need to thin out your paints. I see you have done highlights and you did a good job in my opinion. Also, adding more to the base just adds more to the whole feel of the miniature. I know the base has nothing to do with the competition and I overlooked the bases altogether, but ... a good base goes a long way! Just practice with thinned out paints and you will be surprised just how good they will turn out.

Entry #7
Thinning out the paints will really help you out. The paints look just too thick. Also, not only worry about highlights, but use darker colours for low lights. For example, his pants are white. Hard to highlight white  . Instead.. try base coating with Space Wolves grey or with another light grey and work your way up to white. Looks so much better. Lowlights and highlights really make a model stand out. Try doing a base with static grass. More and more people are using it. It makes a great painted model look even better.

Entry #8
Great paint job. The skin tones look awesome and the colour scheme is great too. I was just not sure about the pants. Looks like it was rushed a bit... at least it looks like it compared to the rest of him. That happens to me all the time... as i am impatient. Anyways.. base looks great! I had a really hard time not choosing this as my pick.

Entry #9
Absolutely fantastic highlighting and lowlighting... especially on the boots. I was going to pick this one but the face was just not appealing to me. Not sure what happened there... whether the camera had anything to do with it. But the face is just not clear and clean and crisp like the rest of her. Great colour choice and again.. those boots/legs are extremely well done.

Entry #10
The highlights are a little too strong/blotchy. Use thinner paints and go more subtle... it will look so much better. The base really suits him.... great job.

All of the above was meant as helpful constructive criticism. I hope no one was offended... and if you are, sorry :D

Round of applause for all the people who shared their entries with the rest of the world ***CLAPS***

On the subject of basing, you could always go the Rackham route and leave it black. You still have to clean off the flash and disguise the slot (if any) though.

dead easy too judge; look at the focal point and study the detail. If outstanding highlights and composition - then look at base. always a give-away if someone has skill or not. - (btw most 25mm figs the face will be the focul point but not hard rule)

vote cast - good effort for all who entered

Opinion was honest, criticism was intended as constructive. Sorry, but there you are. What do you want, only nice comments?
Not bothering to finish the base and then sticking it in a painting comp is just plain lazy IMO, regardless of skill level. And I believe I'm only stating what a lot of others are thinking.

Oh BTW, I was deliberately taking the piss out of Norse..I guess he knows that, but then the Widows are far from his best work IMO. And he's probably the most honest critic here, so he'll appreciate that.
