This is where I wish I still spoke French but: les gobelins = the goblins?

all the names come from that brief time when the russians...pre soviet...were avid francophiles...france being seen as the most cultured society to mimic...and the french reciprocated with names for places where russian nobility often lived or were studying...france being the place send the young Ivans to learn culture....C'est la vie...

Although I speak french..the one time in france....ppl went to English when they could...canadian french is something like a heavy highland brogue...it's technically the same language..but only technically

I work for a news agency and sometimes we have to send out non-English stories for professional translation. When we need to get something into French, we have to specify whether we need European or Canadian French, depending on where the story will be released. Similary, we specify Euro or Latin American Spanish and Euro or Brazilian Portuguese, as well.
