Anyone using ally rules???

Post by Remco »

Is there anyone who uses the ally rules in a league? If so, which rules do you use and what is your experience with them?

We currently use them, but after one season we already restricted the use of allies. We also made the mistake of not letting them count against their position, which resulted in a 6 blitzer human team with a wood elf thrower (who also got a +1 st :pissed: ). Luckily we use this league to experiment with rules for a bigger league we are setting up.

Any comments?!?

We have used and are currently still using allies. The rules are:-

Allied team list as per BB Mag 2

1 position player ally per team

up to 3 more lineman players

Only 1 ally from each allied race

Cannot use TRRs

Having used them for some time, once the current tourney is over, I am pushing to get them kicked out. My advice would be everyone else do the same - using allies reduces the flaws in each race - not a good thing in my opinion.

MBBL2 uses the sames rules that Dangerous Dave just wrote ...

except we allow you have as many lineman as you want as long as its only 1 from each allied race

AND

we removed all the teams with AG 4 as being allies with teams with ST 4.

My league uses ally rules, which ones I am not too sure about. But it is very free flowing and no where near as restricted as the ones I have seen on this post so far. Essentially if you have an allied race (Orcs and Chaos) then you are allowed to choose allies from that race with the following restriction. You are to divide the number of players allowed in the positoin by four, ie as the Chaos team can have 12 Beastmen, you are allowed to put 3 on your Orc team. As the chaos team can have 4 CWs you are allowed to put one on your Orc team. It is always rounded up, so if you wanted a Bull Centaur on your Chaos/Norse/Orc/Skaven team you are allowed one.

The other maxim is that you must always have more of your own race than that of your allies. So if you have an 11 man squad, no more than 5 can be made up of allies.

So far it has worked very well. The rules allow you for maximum creativity and open various strategies up to each team. For example, I have a one turner on my Chaos team. A Skaven gutrunner who has been battered excessively and picked up two niggs in his first four games.
Another example is my Orc team, which started with NO blitzers. I was told repeatedly that I was insane for doing so, but I felt that saving the 20 per blitzer by going with a Beastman would help me out better in the long run. I finished the tournament 10-0.

They are not perfect, but they add a whole lotta spice to the game.

I can understand why someone wouldn't like ally rules. They're a crutch used to compensate for team weakness. Muscle/AV teams look for agility players, elves look for guys with ST skill access, and so on. Allies take away team balance.

:-? ... I really don't know what thinking about allies. It cames to my mind the example of a human team, which may take wood elves linemen as allies, without restrictions... (correct ?). It seems a little bit too powerful for me.

In the other hand, I like the idea o Pact of Chaos, ... but not in a league. I think this really make lost the own strategies all teams have, and they lost a part of personnality here.

I would sign for a system where league teams should have 4 positions, that may allow 1 BG + 2 allies or 3 allies ... With only one position player ally, for example (ie 1 position player, 2 linemen max). That something which may keep a little bit more the identity o each team... maybe.
