I've been using a piece of wood as a cutting board for years. Are there any major benefits to a pro cutting board?

I use one of these two and it's pretty good. I found mine at the street market in town for about Â£1, along with some clippers, knife blades etc. The little hardware stalls or hardware trade shops are ideal for picking up modelling stuff.

iÂ´m using this kind of mat at work and at home ( see my workspace)...
and a benefit is, that the most cuts INTO the mat closing themselfs with this kind of plastic material and with a hardwood board there is alway the chance a cut in the wood will drive the knife in a wrong direction.
BUT i think, thats mostly importend if you cut paper or thin boards, not to importend while cutting minis
