Dwarves need advice in short tourney

Next weekend I’m going to play the first match in a short tournament (my first tourney ever). There are 8 teams in my division and we play each other once and than the winner plays a final against the winner of the other division. I play dwarves and the other teams in my division are (in order of which I play them):
• Norse
• Orc
• Wood-Elves
• Lizzards
• Amazone
• Khemri
• Amazone

My team consists of:
2 slayers
2 blitzers
2 runners
5 LB’s
2 RR
7 FF

My question is: how do I beat the Norse?
He has:
2 blitzers
2 catchers
1 thrower
6 Linemen
3 RR
8 FF
1 Apo

The Norse are faster and a lot more agile. Furthermore they have catchers, throwers and an additional RR. So they will have a clear advantage handling the ball. The only advantage I have is the toughness of my players (armour and TS).

How would you guys tackle this match and develop this team during its 7 (maybe 8) matches?

Play full contact. Get as many Norse down each turn as you can, and make sure the rest are tied up in TZs (preferably with assists / cover so the best he can get is 1 dice blocks back). Don't get sucked in so that he can use his pace to break away - keep a blitzer or slayer back to cover that possibility. Just bump & grind 'em basically ... it should be fairly easy. Oh, but watch the sidelines ... don't let 'em Frenzy you off the sidelines. :wink:

The first time I ever played against a Norse team, I spent the first half of the first ...er, half... being frustrated at them all having block and me NOT having block. Then the AV started kicking in... I started the second half fielding 11 men vs. his 9, and by the end of the game I was up 2-1 and he had 7 men on the field. No fouling -- just lots of KOs and cracks.

Avoid 1dbs like the plague, but keep everything else as full-clout as you can. Mark some targets and hammer away.

Scrap 4 FF and get another reroll.
You do not need a lot of money with dwarves, and high FF is only preferable for longer leagues (10+ games)

I would also play the first game without an apo for an additional reroll.

The norse should be easy.
Start by going after his blitzers (pay attention to jump up).
He should have bought 4 blitzers, punish him for not doing that.
As soon as you have a numerical advantage start marking his players.
And make him burn his rerolls trying to pick up the ball (he has no sure hands).

On defense protect your runners and slayers.

If you aren't going to continue the team after the season then you can afford to drop the fan factor down (particularly if you are using LRB 4.0) so take the extra reroll.

Norse can't afford to follow up when they hit you - because you've got much much better armour than them. So just try to block them more than they block you.

BTW Don't worry about the AG3 everywhere. Rookie throwers & catchers aren't that good - so if he starts passing the ball around so much the better - he'll mess up occassionally.

Well I played my first match. It was rocky and my blitzer got SI in the second turn. He scored late in first half but I managed to fill his ko-box and score twice in second. What you can call a close match.

With my winnings I bought an apo and I have 10k left. My ff also increased to 8. My next opponent will be orcs. He also has 2 RR, 9FF and one MNG (a black Orc). So we are both at 10 players. His being 3 BoB's, 4 blitzers and 3 line-orcs.

Any advice on this one?

Well, he hasn't got a thrower and only 2 RR, so he will probably have trouble handling the ball. You can target his BoB's with your slayers. For the rest stay compact and use you skills (block!) to get his players down. When tehy are down he has less mv than you...

Remember: now it's you who has the advantage with the block skill - use it!
So block, block and block your opponent relentlessly.
Mark all his players - your tactic will be vaguely comparable to the norse in that his players are faster and (slightly) more agile than yours, so prevent him from moving around.
The only threat to you IMO are the blitzers: do prevent them from running away from you, especially if your opponent gets hold of the ball.

But then again,that's all very similar to your game against the norse, except that you won't be able to rely on the casualties, so keep a tighter and safer game, being aggressive against teh BoBs to prevent them from hitting you first if you can...

Second match

Thanks for all the advice guys!

I played my second match and lost... I was rather unlucky first half. He overpowered me with his BoB’s that hardly failed a single block (even without the block-skill) and he BH one of my runners early on (I didn’t apo him).

In the second half things were tense and I had the advantage and nearly secured the 1-1. Some amazing dodges on his side and a failed gfi on my side signaled the end of the match. 0-2 in the end.

At least my team is back to full strength and I got 80k bringing my treasury to 90k. My next match is going to be against woodies. Should I buy a third RR or a replacement LB? I tend to go for the last option because even against woodies someone will eventually get KO or BH during the match and I need 11 players to cover the whole pitch…

What’s your ideas? (also on how to play dwarves vs woodies; quite opposite teams actually)

Btw: received a first skill: one of my slayers has MB now!
