Here's an idea I had:
At the end of every season, you roll a die for each player with 31 or more SPP ("Emerging Star"). if you roll a one, they get the characteristic "Greedy." You get a -1 on the roll for every experience level they are beyond "Emerging Star."
"Greedy" players think they're "all that" and start trash talking, making "yo mama" jokes and generally are disrespectful to the coaching staff, other players and the team owner. In order to get them to play in a game, they require d3 x 10,000 gp per game. If you don't pay, they don't play (and they start making fun "o' yo fat mama").
If the next time a season ends and they fail the roll again, they now demand twice the d3 roll, fail again, and it's three times a roll (and so on in that fashion). At the end of any game (or right after a role is failed between season) you can fire a greedy player and replace it with a rookie of the same type.
Another idea would be that because they are so obnoxious and refuse to work well with the rest of the team (they are "the star" after all), you can't use rerolls with them, or they cause the team to lose a reroll for any game they participate in. "Yo mama" jokes really erode team cohesion. This would be cumulative, so if you had three greedy players playing that game, you'd lose 3 rerolls for the game (imagine three guys who are only interested in showing eachother up and the effect it would have on the team on the field). This reroll thing might be a bit much given that you also have to pay them.
Thoughts?

I vaguely remember appearance fees. The main reason I came up with this idea is that the league I play in currenlty uses a modified crush where if you fail the roll, the player is gone. You can't pay him to stick around and he doesn't go into some sort of free agent pile. The player is just gone. I figured a better alternative to that would be to have it just be a hard choice to make.
