looking for a nice red armour scheme

Hi,

I am going to play ChaosDwarves in a new league here, locally, and I was wondering if anyone had a nice red armour-scheme for me to ehm... "follow".
Basically I want to paint them in the "classical" way, so red armour/jackets (for the hobs), green for the raised areas on their fists, and black/metal for the armour things.
I am looking for a recipe (sp?) on how to do nice looking red armour, a bit bright, too. Just to get some ideas.
Something like THIS.

I'd suggest something along these lines: (Using GW colour names)

Blood Red
Watered down red ink
Highlight Blood red
Highlight mix of Blood Red and Blazing Orange

OK, thanks ! Ill try that... was not sure if I should get an "underlayer" of a brownish ink, and if that would be done as a first layer, or later on, etc. etc.

Maybe Ill just try on a CD or a hobbo first... Ill keep you informed !

you might want to try a darkish red ink for shading .. red ink + a little bit of blue, or purple ..

Well, IMHO, that depends on what sort of red you're highlighting up to (does that make sense?) When I'm going for a deep red, and looking to end my highlights around (Vallejo Game Color Bloody Red), I usually start with the dark portions at (GW Terracotta), and wash it with GW Chestnut ink... Then I'll use (Reaper Blood Red) and blend up from there...

Make sense? Probably not... I'm not the best at explaining .

If you're looking to go towards pink, or closer to white, I'd use either Warlock purple, or Reaper Blood Red as a base, then VJ Bloody red (similar to Reaper 'Bright Red', I think) then blend up to pink...

But... I usually take my highlights up to orange... Sooo... I go Terracotta, Reaper Blood Red, VJ Bloody Red, Firehawk Red (which is a little orange-ish), then GW Blazing Orange, then... if I'm feeling special, a touch of GW Firey Orange....

Here's an example on one of my minis... This one is layered, as above, and lightly washed with chestnut ink:

Yes, that does makes sense !

I was thinking of finishing it off with the old GW Bloodangel red (aka Orange), but decided against it... I think that's too much work, for now. I want this team up and ready this weekend if possible.

No idea if I can pull it off though.

Ill take some pictures soon (basing still needs to be done) and I'll show what I did.

Now, where's that roster ???

And... just to chime in again

That HThark The Unstoppable mini looks like it might have been done with some glazing over white primer. (I think one of the old Black Gobbo's has an article on glazing if you're not sure what I mean). The Red seems a bit 'thin' (but in a good way!)

I like the minis on your site btw, nice work !

I still have to learn the "underpainting" thing, as in "paint the mini in a higher/lighter color, and use an inkwash to tone it down". Still using the old drybrush-techniques, although it became "wetbrush" recently (almost blending). This means; not a 'dry" brush, but a tinned down version of the paint, still slightly wet, on the brush.
Most of the time I am halfway with a mini and then realise that I could have used brighter colors, and a darker wash to tone it down... Oh well, you live and learn.

I did try some things with Vallejo Model Color "smoke", though... not as shiney as fleshwash/brown ink from GW. Just tone it down a little with some water and it gives a nice effect.

Ah, yes... 'Smoke' is wonderful! The reason that I reccomend the Flesh and Chestnut washes from GW is that they have a reddish cast to them, while smoke is pretty much brown (with some sort of interference medium in there). As for the shininess of the GW inks, I don't worry too much, it'll tone down once I'm done with the mini and hit it with some dullcoat.
