Varnish

Which varnish is best suited to use on blood bowl models : mat or gloss?

I'm afraid the gloss varnish would make the models to shiny, which would not be in favor of realism (a shiny armor while battling it out in the mud??

)

Is it okay to apply varnish after basing the mini's with static grass?

I dont know about the static grass... BUT: I have heard that some people have good results with first 1-2 layers of gloss, and a layer of matt after that. Gloss tends to be dstronger thus better for protecting the miniature. The matt is to counter the shiney-effect.

I just spray them matt, 2-3 layers. Works fine by me so far. Just be carefull not to spray too close, and just get 2-3 thin layers on the mini.

Other opinions may vary though, but I find the GW-matt is shiney enough already !

I've had differing experience with static grass: I got a quite expensive kind, sprayed matt varnish over it and it went flat and soggy. I tried again with another brand (out of a big bag I picked up at a yard-sale) and the varnish didn't affect the static effect at all.

Hey Nighthawk. Gloss or Mat? NEITHER. I've been using the Vallejo Satin varnish and I love it. Not too flat, not too shiny. Its just right.

Gloss and then matte. Best protection and no shiny.

I just got some of this, and although I've only tried it on a couple of models, I have to agree so far. very nice finish

I still find that embedding your mini in a cube of resin offers the best protection. And also makes lying them down when prone or stunned is much easier!!

In other words: the matt isnt available anymore...

I am considering NOT varnishing minis with this, and just take my chances with un-varnished minis, repainting once in a while cant be that bad.

Hopefully the local train-shop can get me some of that Vallejo matt-stuff, it cant be bad compared with this "new" citadel stuff !

Well, I couldnt see a spray on the Vallejo home page... but I might have missed it.

So this might be a 'brush on' varnish... does anyone have experience with it i.e. how much on the brush, do you have to thin it with water, dry-time, etc. etc.

Just saw on the http://www.acrylicosvallejo.com/ site, that there IS an aerosol-varnish.
I'm off to the shop now... got to order something !

I've not tried using satin finish varnishs but if you're after really flat matt, try Windsor & Newton's matt spray. You can't tell the miniatures are varnished at all. I use it over a coat or two of high gloss (humbrol) for added protection, as others have said.
