Travellers new League saison with a Ogre team...

Post by traveller »

Well, the new league saison just started... and i ´m trying out a new team and will post here from time to time, what happend with them:

The Moguntia Manglers
.... tatatataaaaa, my new, still unpainted Ogre team.

TR 100
5 Ogres
6 gobbos
FF 2
RR 2
no Apo at the beginning

I took this team out of two reasons. First, i want to paint a new nice team for the GD 2005 and second, i want to play a team more for fun... ... so i have alway a excuse, when loosing .

Last week i played my first game against a gobboteam with 2 trolls. Funny thing, as it turned out , my opposite coachs Gobbos were painted exactly with the colorschema like my Gobbos :o Hard to check... just the bases were different.
Turn 3 saw 2 badly hurt missing the next game and 1 KO gobbo.. luckly not my gobbos  After falling down after a dodge my gobbo lost the ball turn 6 and a opposite gobbo scored turn 7. Turn 8, the kickoff ball bounced directly into the hands of my gobbo, standing next to the ogre at the line... so the ogre used the chance, throw the gobbo and, after some inaccurate bouncing and a GFI my gobbo scored the 1:1. :D
The second half was just getting and loosing the ball... one of my ogres was fouled out and was just missing this game (luckly because of no Apo !)
At the end i got 60.000 ... enough for a Apo and a pogostick. and lost one FF :( The next game will be against a Dwarf team.

Hi Trav,

nice to hear about the progress of another Ogre-Team :D . I had the first league game with my Ogre team yesterday (TR 110, 5 Ogres, 6 Gobos, 2 RR, 7 FF, 1 Apo) against Kithor's Chaos-Team - and I won 2:1 :D . However, I lost 3 Goblins early on :( (2 deaths and 1 stat-decrease) and didn't use my Apo because I decided to save him for my Ogres (who never got hurt at all  ) so I'm down to 8 players now...

But it really was a fun game and I'm looking forward to buy more Ogres 8) (as the Gobos break so easily...).

Cheers,

Tante Käthe

@lereiveur
For my Ogres the first normal skill will be Break Tackle to have one blitzing Ogre that cannot be pinned easily. After that 2 Guards and then a mix of Break Tackle, Guard and Multiple Block. You need some Guarders first before you can safely start to multi-block.

First Double on an Ogre will be Sure Hands (a Sure Hands/Break Tackle Ogre will make a fine ballcarrier 8) ), then Block and maybe one Ogre with Pass for Throwing Team-Mates.

Cheers,

Tante Käthe.

Hi Trav,

What happend to your Big Guys in the last times? Are they still unpainted???

A fact which I can't understand for a collecter like you are

Do you join the bavarian open? I'll go for it, At first I wanted to play a new Khemriteam. But the damn trader still didn't send them to me.
So my woodies will get a chance. Caus I'll manage to finish their painting till June!
For the tournee I going to join the NAF, but I have to find a way to pay the memebershiptax. I still don't have a creditcard. Do you know what I can do?

So good luck to your Ogres, see ya.

yep, i will visit this tourney, too. And i will try to visit the phoenix Cup and the B7, too. But no BB at Nottingham this year !

Maybe you should try to contact Tim. I think, he will knew, how to do this. I dont knew who is the NAF man for Germany at the moment.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last week my Ogre team played their second game. But my BIG guys lost this time against a dwarf team.
I made the mistake not to score as fast as possible while i got the chance for it. At the second half nearly all my gobbos went KO or missing this game, so there wasnt hardly any chance to score. Ball handling and dodging with ogres isnt so good.

And the dwarf coach, sitting next to my touchdown zone, was delaying very good for some turns. And all my ogres were occupied...

First half my gobbo tried to pickup the ball... 1 ... RR 1... ok, there my chance was gone. I tried GFI... 1... 1 ... i tried to throw a gobbo... Fumble ! Argh ! Finaly I lost 2:0 and both of us got 4 cas. At last i dropped both of his slayers quite fast  One of my ogres was hurt, but luckly i bought a apo last game ! :) Just one gobbos is missing his next game. I bought a new one so i can field 11 players again. :) Damm, my fan factor is still 1.

But it was, again, a very good and fun game with a nice opposite coach. I dont think i will win anything, but i will have fun.

Next game against necromancers...

Yep, I learnd that lesson too! Clockplaying is not easy and sometimes it is quit the best to score!

I think your loss against dwarfs is no problem. Cause dwarfs are the bain of all big guys without block!
They all have block, a good AV and last but not least the two slayer, so it is hard to gain a majority advantge.

well, 3th game is over.... and i have to vent my frustration somewhere...

I played against a necromancer team with 2 werwolfs, 2 freshgolems, 1 ghouhl and 1 wright... the rest zombies. One zombie and the wer got block as additional skill. My team doesnt got a additional skill until now... just 4 ogres waiting to get just a cas to get a skill roll !!!

1th half:
Turn 1 ... perfect weather the ogres kicked ... it started good. Wright went out with KO. :)
Turn 3 ... first accounter of a gobbo with a werwolf... just KO... uff :)
Turn 4 ... 2 Ogres Bonehead ... i need to dodge with a ogre. He didnt and hurt himself missing this game. So i used my apo. :(
Turn 5 ... still i need to dodge with a ogre to stop a werwolf ball carrier... and again my ogre didnt dodge. :(
Turn 6 Werwolf made his TD.
Turn 7 I got quicksnap and with my first block a skull and no reroll !
Turn 8 i tried a quicksnap to get a at last some SPPs ... good throw, bad catch... argh !
Alltogether 5 boneheads in 1th half.

2th half
Turn1 started with a rockthrow... easy target as my team got a FF 1 ! :( ... and one gobbo stunned !
I made a big mistake, exited to give the ball after a touchback to my gobbo and lost one reroll as i moved a mini without moving the turnmarker. :-? My blocking time ended with 2 ogres bonehead. Now i got the chance to try a 1tuner, but my ogre fumble the gobbo and the werwolf robbed the bouncing ball.
Turn 2 The wright went ko out of game again
Turn 3 3 Ogres , all of one flank, bonehead !!! Another ogre down because of bad block... :o
Turn 4 Another two of the ogres turned bonehead ! One of my ogres and a gobbo reached the ball werwolf just before the opposite TD zone and the werwolf went down dodging my ogre...
Turn 5 i just need to dodge out with my gobbo and grap the ball to score...dodge 1 reroll 1... argh !!! :o
Turn 6 still 3 ( three !!!!) ogres turned bonehead and didnt like to get up at all !!! One ogre dodged out and just managed to fall down blocking the ball werwolf...
Turn 7 nearly all ogres were no more bonehead, but all out of reach to stop the werwolf !!
Turn 8 the lonely gobbo blocked the werwolf just 4 squares fin frontof my TD zone !! two blockdice against him and still he brought the wolf down, but the gobbo went down , too. Without a reroll the werwolf got up, picked up the ball and with a GFI scored a 0:2 against my team.
Alltogether 10 times bonehead in 2th half!!!

I got no TD, no complitions, not a single cas, nothing ! ...10+ time boneheaded ogres , some of them so boneheaded they didnt want to getup from ground at all !
50.000 money, which i just can save for a new ogre or the next dead gobbo. And still FF 1. With this roster it´s not possible to get more FF in the beginning... One ogre got a skill from MVP... +1 MA or better to choose a skill ?

After this loss and this no fun game i m starting to think about not to paint these ogres as i dont want to play them with similiar results at tournaments ! I wasnt playing bad, but this bonehead thing kept this game really frustrating and no tactic was possible ! I knew, this is not a winning team, but i didnt expected this kind of mess... argh !

Damm...

Bonehead can screw up the game a lot.

Twice allready I had atouchback, gave the ball to an ogre who prompty would not move anywhere anymore until he got blocked!

But playing with ogres in itself is soooo much fun! you never know what is going to happen, it can be good, it can be bad.

What I did learn is that a low FF is bad for the team. I started with 6 ogres, 5 gobbo's 1RR and 1 FF. No APO! First game, Ogre killed!

After three games I got the Ogre back (2 x a 6 on winnings!) and also have the needed APO. Skills are hard to get for the Ogres because the mainly get them through casualties and MVP's.

But never forget not to play them too seriously (that does not mean you should not go for the win!), but like halflings you just expect to loose!

Keep painting them, I would like to see them very much!

I'm really sorry for you, but what did you expect? You have 5 Ogres. Assuming you always want to do something with each Ogre each turn, you have to throw 5 Bonehead rolls each turn. Statistically, this will give you 5/6 boneheaded Ogres each turn. Multiplied by 16 turns, gives you 80/6 boneheaded Ogres, eaqualling about 13 - 14 times one of your five Ogres becomes Boneheaded. In an AVERAGE game, no bad luck as an excuse.

If you're not prepared to accept this, don't play Ogre teams. Bonehead is inherent to the team. It would be all to easy to get a squad of ST5 players with no negatrait, squishing all your opponents. I never liked the idea of Big Guy teams anyway. In the beginning, they're too frustrating to play with because of the inherent nega-trait. Once they get advanced, in my opinion they're still too powerful, even with nega-traits.

This reminds me of those players who think they're unlucky if their Black Orc doesn't succeed in dodgeing out of a tackle zone, AFTER picking up the ball in the same tackle zone. Those same people think YOU're lucky if your Gutter Runner does exactly the same thing.

Chance for Black Orc to succeed: 1/3 (picking up the ball in TZ) * 1/2 (dodgeing) = 1/6 = 17% chance of succes
Chance for Gutter Runner to succeed: 2/3 (picking up the ball in TZ) * 35/36 (dodgeing with Dodge skill) = almost 2/3 = 67% chance of succes.

Bad losers tend to forget about statistics when they are losing. Again: The right man/creature for the right job!

trav - don't throw gobbos who have the ball. Its a very risky play that is more likely to result in your opponent having the ball than you scoring.

Instead (especially with touchbacks) try to get the ball to an Ogre and then slowly pound you way downfield. If you are lucky you'll get a lot of the opposition off the pitch so scoring won't be too hard. If not they'll have too many people and you'll get turned over - but crucially when you have the ball they have to come onto your ogres. So you get to hit them :D
