Playing against Woodelfes

Post by habasta »

I´m playing with HE.
My Team
9 Lineman, one with block and one MA 7
1 Lionwarrior
1 Phoenixwarrior
1 Dragonwarrior with ST 4

Woodelfs
7 Lineman, 2 with dodge
2 Catcher, 1 with sprint and one with leap
1 Thrower
1 Treeman

how to play against them?
Knock down the two catcher? And a fast TD?
I´m afraid about the treeman. With his Ma2 he isn´t fast, but ST 6 is bad.
I think, i will go 3 steps away from this guy.

Anything else i should do?

Sorry for my bad english.

Hey,

try to stay away from the Tree and try to get his Catchers out of the Field. You will see AV7 breaks easy then AV8 ;) :)

Play it safe, he has no wardancer (a major flaw in his team).

Don't try to outscore him, outblock him, you have higher AV and more block.

His treeman is no problem, dodge away and let him take root.
He can't run very fast.

Note on teamdevelopment, your catcher needs block and dodge more than anything.

@slup
i think about leap for my Catcher. Do you think block and dodge is much better?

Block and dodge is so much better that leap on the catchers.
Both offensive and defensive.
It is your only AV7 player and it will make him survive longer.
It also gives you a ST3 MA8 sweeper.

Give leap to your ST4 player and you will be breaking cages better than wood elves.

OK, second and last try, TBB went off-line last time I wrote this:

I must say that leaping catchers do have their advantages, especially if your league has many tacklers. I played against a leaping high elf team with my dwarves last weekend and I still have nightmares.

As for playing against wood elves, dance around the tree, but don't get too close. And pin down the catchers. Both in offence and defence pinning down his catchers is a priority, you don't want to fail a GFI with his catchers unchallenged, or out of reach. On offence, focus on keeping the ball, take no unnecessary risks. Always keep a player available to play the ball to, both in offence and in defence.

Leap = 2 or 3 nice touchdowns and he will die like a hero
block = surviving some more games ;)

Words of wisdom...

As for beating those prancy elves, run the ball, don't pass it, take your time to score and try to do as much damage as possible in your drives. Once you have a numbers advantage then you can start thinking about scoring more TD's and making fancy plays.
Take advantage of the STR 4, he makes a fine ball carrier, keep some line-elves close and your opponent will be looking at half die blocks to get the ball loose.
As said before the wood elf catchers with their MA 9 are very annoying: they must be prime termination targets. Stay away from the tree, it's slow and really not that great on a WE team, just dodge out (last thing to do though) and try to ignore it.

So in a tournament setting you would suggest leap over block?

I would, I've seen it in action Image. But leaping is a risky action and I would make sure there's a safe alternative when developing the team, oh and the power lies in multiple leapers. 2 touch downs is not as easy as Aksho suggests by the way.

Team developement.
On any elf team I would take at least one leap strip ball player, for high elves that might well be a lion. The rute of developement for such a player is block first, then leap or strip ball. Dont count on leap for offense, try making your offensive drives a series of 2-dice blocks and 2+ rolls (prefferably with skill rr's).
A leaping strip baller gives you a chance to deal with high strength ball carriers. With 2 dice against and a rr you have around 70 % chance of popping loose the ball with a strip baller. Better chances if the ballcarrier doesnt have block and you do. Its a risky move, but against a high str. ballcarrier it might be the only option (And of course strip ball is usefull vs str 3 ball carriers without sure hands as well :) ).

For the other lions I would take block, dodge or dodge, passblock/diving tackle (block third).

i feel that leap is a crutch skill, it keeps you from playing right by giving you a 3+ to always get somewhere, but 3+ is an awful bloodbowl roll imo, and it makes you win far fewer games. at a tourney it may be worth taking leap on a blitzer though, a crutch is better than nothing if you have a broken leg, and tourney defense is hard with elves.

bah, Leap is uber... it opens up so many new options it's crazy. sure, a 3+ isn't that great, but don't you ever try a pick-up in a TZ with your elves, or a dodge through a TZ when you're in a bad spot ?

leap gets used like once every 3 games if you are playing the best percentage game you can, if you are playing wrong it gets used 2 or 3 times a game if the leaper survives his own skill, imo of course.
