I started doing that for tournament play. I want to hit with blitzers and use BOBs to tie people up. So giving Guard to the BOB is better than giving it to the blitzer. Since they can then both assist and tie people up at the same time.
In league play I'm not so sure. I think Guarding BOBs develop more slowly - but you get more use for that first skill. I once played against an Orc team who gave everyone Guard as the 1st skill. When you are up against 8 Guards life is very very tough.
If I had to pick now, I'd probably give the first two to get a skill Guard, and the next two block. I like developing "evenly" so giving the SPP acquiring skills to those who are last to develop tends to help even things up a bit more.
I usually take gaurd first on Blitzers and block on black orcs. Second skill for black orcs is 2 with guard and 2 with mighty blow. MB makes the team.
The advantages of block are obvious if your opponent doesnt have it. I however prefer to have reliable blockers. Guard is a good choice as Gken shows in the fumbbl tbbelite group. However it does make them a depend on luck a little bit too much for my liking.
In tourneys it would make since.
Stronger guy will probably be around when you need him, have to give the skill to someone and can't give everyone a skill.

I think I'll go with that. Sounds good to me. Give two BOB's Guard, two other Block as a first skill. The two Guarders will make life hard on everyone (in combination with the Troll and a few Blitzers which also got Guard). The two other BOB's with block will smack everybody to the floor.
It is true that blocking with dedicated players like BOB's without Block generates a lot of turn-overs. You make blocks with them almost each turn, with a chance of 1 in 9 that they will go down. Multiplied by four BOB's equals a lot of burned Re-Rolls...

But for leagues that would be crazy.
i can't stand not having kick, and i like to set my 3 linemen on the line to get beat up, and i like giving the skills i said to the blitzers, so black orc it is.
in a league i'm forced to take actual good skills on the black orcs, of course, not kick, but then i also get a troll, so i set my defense up a little differently.
